An easy-to-follow, practical Hadoop text

Among all Hadoop books available, I found that this book is the easiest one to walk through. The structure of this book is more logically designed and the context flows smoothly from one chapter to the next without keeping cross-referencing back and forth like some of the other similar books. The author has given clear instructions on each task to be performed, from how to set up a standalone Hadoop dev environment and a four-node Hadoop cluster, to how to configure Eclipse with Maven to run the MapReduce examples, and so on. This is one of the strongest points of this book that can help beginners save a lot of initial frustrations in setting up a Hadoop dev environment and getting the first MapReduce example working.
The other strong point of this book is that, rather than using the boring "word-counting" examples that many similar books copy over and over, all examples of this book use the same context of mining consumer spending patterns as reflected with their credit card transactions. This same context is used consistently throughout the entire text to illustrate how to write MapReduce programs from the most basic to the most advanced. This is much better than dumping all MapReduce programs to readers without following a logical order.
This book also covers other important Hadoop subjects such as the Hadoop Distributed FileSystem, Hadoop MapReduce Job Orchestration and Workflows, Hadoop Streaming, and Hadoop Administration. After finishing this book, I found that it's much easier to understand other Hadoop books that are less logically organized than this book. All in all, this is the book to start with if you desire to acquire a solid Hadoop skillset as quickly as possible without wasting too much of your time.
