Partial cover and misses the best parts of the main text and what it does cover is not to the same standard.

I bought the study guide as companion to the main text "Options as a Strategic Investment" 5th ed.

I am disappointed with the guide as it only covers the spreads covered in the first part of the main text. I wrongly assumed it covered all the chapters in the main text with typical end of chapter type questions and answers. It does not cover any of the mathematical ideas presented in the book i.e. compound Implied volatility, calculating option spread contracts to neutralise specific greeks, stock price movement etc. It also does not cover any of the good discussion on the VIX and volatility hedging strategies nor VIX futures (covered in the main text).

In my mind, it is the second part of the main text that really makes the book worth while and yet the work book does not cover any of it.

The spreads that are covered in the work book, can be studies just as well and for free on the CBOE's website under their education section.

About the Author
Abraham Eraly is the author of four acclaimed volumes on premodern Indian history--- The Last Spring: The Lives and Times of the Great Mughals (later published in two volumes, as Emperors of the Peacock Throne and The Mughal World), Gem in the Lotus: The Seeding of Indian Civilisation, The First Spring: The Golden Age of India and The Age of Wrath: A History of the Delhi Sultanate. He was born in Kerala and educated there and in Chennai. He has taught Indian history in colleges in India and the United States, and was the editor of a current affairs magazine for several years.

A case of editorial negligence

I have enjoyed Eraly's past publications about the Mughals and have long been intrigued by the five dynasties of the Delhi Sultanate based on previous reading in Wolsley Haig and Majumdar's monumental history of India. So I was delighted that he had taken on this complex and confusing period in his latest work of popular history. I was very eager to obtain a copy. To his credit, the book did hold my attention throughout and I was able to follow the complex cast of characters with very little confusion. I give him high marks for his narrative abilities. Unfortunately, I thought his analytical comments were frequently less than insightful and seemed to reflect the antiquated notions of an earlier generation of historians -- particularly in his assessments of tyrannical behavior, the sexual proclivities of certain sultans (which apparently sapped their potency as political figures -- an apparent holdover from Victorian prudery and prurient Orientalist fascination) and the remarkably juvenile explanation for the Islamic subjugation of India (in part, enervating climatic effects on the Hindus!). Also, his editors have failed him with this volume. It is cheaply produced on poor quality paper with nothing in the way of illustration (no photographs, genealogical charts or maps). Such things are very necessary to the novice in this period and this book is clearly pitched to that audience. Probably, the editors had no faith in its marketability and wanted to save on production costs. But worst of all, there are many mechanical errors in the text along with annoying misuse of words. There is a large-scale repetition of text from the intro in a later part of the book. Any author will have such errors and oversights in an initial manuscript but a good editor can be counted on to catch most of them. Not in this case. I feel very badly for Mr. Eraly. This book's overall failure is probably not his fault. I have enjoyed reading this book, but for me, it is not a "keeper."

Signficant, but needs rewrite

A full-length treatment of the history of the Delhi Sultanate (over 400 pages) is a welcome addition to the general history of India. The author's style is fresh and engaging and is eminently readable. These are big points in its favor, and one would like to recommend it. Unfortunately, the text is poorly structured and full of repetitions. A substantial rewrite would significantly improve it. Cutting out the redundancies would probably reduce the word count by one quarter, which would be a major boon. Tightening and deepening the arguments would enhance the quality of the work.

This book consists of two major sections. Section I (Part II - VI) is a chronicle of the of "India's medieval history," but in fact from before the Delhi Sultanate at the time of Gazni to the Moghuls (at times, the author goes beyond the original scope of recording the Sultanate, and seems intent on making the book a history of India altogether; his forays are however half-hearted). It is sultans and battles (plus their ghoulish tortures) all the way. Some of these rulers were good, others appalling - but one wonders why one is sheepishly to follow them and their armies as they reduce rebellions, conquer kingdoms, slaughter infidels, or go about the raiding business with abandon.

Part II is far more interesting: it is a political, cultural, economic (albeit in limited way) and socio-religious history of the age. Had Part II been Part I, one would have better understood the dynamics between the people of Hindustan and their conquerors. I'd urge the prospective reader to start with Part II, and skim over Part I until the interest weakens.

The author paints with broad brush strokes the image of a rigorist Islam and an accommodationist Hinduism. The image of the two civilizations being "oil and water" (and never mixing) recurs. First of all, the statement should be qualified: as the author himself argues, mystical religious movements on both sides did have commonalities (see e.g. his treatment of Kabir on pg. 411 ff.), albeit at the popular rather than the elite level. History no longer is religious elite history. Secondly, Hinduism's accommodationism was limited by the twin pillars of metempsychosis and caste. If Islam was politics of violence, Hinduisms' was politics of disgust. Both were equally absolutist, though by different means, and with different outcomes. So the analysis remains somewhat superficial.

The categorizing in terms of diads and triads, and juxtaposition of opposites, sometimes takes the author to make statements that are unsupported, facile, or contradictory. "Windshield wiper history" of recurrent opposites makes good reading and is easily remembered, but it might hide complexities and path-dependent outcomes. There is much interesting information in this book, but one should pick through the stack with great caution.

Interesting book but with a heavy dose of the author's prejudice which colors the narrative. Highly repetitive. Needs major editing. Was looking to read a history of that period. Instead read an opinion. Not particularly useful. Or enjoyable.

For the beginner and the intermediate player, this is the best chess opening book
book on the market.
This is the only book that clearly helps you choose the best type of opening for
your style of play. He uses a symbol, "Who Should Use It" for each opening in the
book. Next to the symbol he describes what type of player should use the opening.
Many openings are presented -- 343 pages. As a result, pawn to Q4 is best
for me.
He also gives useful strategy tips.
The material is clearly taught and well organized. Don't let the title
fool you into thinking that it's a book for bad players.
Finally, each opening has the game moves for when white wins and when black
wins. Thus offense and defense are both presented.
Check this book out. It's got a lot to offer.

Ok, But Not Great

BACKGROUND: I bought this ~3.5 years ago, largely to exploit Amazon's free shipping offer on another item that I was more interested in obtaining. At the time, the only thing I consistently played was correspondence chess. I've since expanded into more serious realms of chess playing, including USCF rated 'slow' games; speed chess (online and over-the-board) ranging from 1|0 to 10|0, against players ranging from Class E to Expert (and even one master). My current (albeit still provisional) USCF rating is in the 2000s. Back when I read this book, I essentially had no prior experience with chess books. I've now finished about 20, and partially gone through dozens of others.
Despite all of this experience since having initially read and reviewed this book, I maintain the same views that I had then.

REVIEW: The phrase 'vague jack of all trades, master of none' adequately summarizes this book.

Aside from a few chapters dedicated to the philosophical aspects of chess opening theory (what to strive for in an opening, types of openings, common mistakes to avoid, etc.), the book is divided by opening (e.g. Caro-Kann Defense) and further sub-divided into specific variations (e.g. Advance variation of the Caro-Kann Defense). Within each variation section is a SHORT introductory paragraph on the basic idea behind it followed by two sample games: one where white won, and one where black won with the variation.

Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, insightful explanations are often sadly lacking. For example, on the Najdorf variation of the Sicilian Defense, all it says about black's 5...a6 move is "By simply moving the a-pawn instead of the g-pawn [as black does for the Sicilian Dragon variation], you change the nature of the game". Fine. But WHY does it change the nature of the game? What's the POINT of 5...a6 anyway? Such crucial insight is never provided.

In addition to its vague/evasive/gloss-over explanations:

1.) The position diagrams are stupidly labeled. Instead of caption that says, for instance, "Position of French Defense Winawer Variation after 15.)Nxb5", it'll say "Figure 5-7: the French Winawer", making you needlessly search the move sequence to find where it says "(see Figure 5-7)". Sometimes the diagram and its reference aren't even on the same page, making it more of a hassle.
Why no one in editing thought to label the diagrams the former (correct) way, I have no idea.

2.) While the book does a good job of hitting most important openings, a few big ones aren't covered at all: Benko Gambit, Bogo-Indian Defense, Queen's Indian Defense, for example. Some fairly popular variations aren't covered either (I realize it's probably impossible to make a readable opening book that covers everything important).

CONCLUSION: Some might say I'm being too harsh because, after all, it's a "For Dummies" book. Perhaps. Nonetheless, I still think this book could have done better. It isn't terrible, but its consistently vague explanations don't make it great either. Beginners to solid intermediate level players might sincerely like this, but anyone much above ~1700 elo should likely pass on this; maybe check it out at the library or borrow it from a friend before buying it.

Note also that I've gone through the entire book and its collection of games at least once.

Good Book on Finding Your Opening Strategies...

I am not that advanced in Chess skill, but this book can be a bit deceiving. While trying to follow games via the chess notation I seemed to get lost... even when playing them out on a nearby board I found myself multiple times just completely losing the flow... within games the author will side track to a "what if" scenario and some of the formatting for this was tough for me.

I enjoyed the layout of the book and you do find yourself finding a fondness for a certain style, which the author sort of says is the goal... so for this it is a solid book.

I passed on the first attempt

I used the Kindle version of the practice exams in addition to CompTIA Security+ Study Guide SY0-401 6th Edition (http://www.amazon.com/CompTIA-Security-Study-Guide-SY0-401/dp/1118875079) and I passed the test on the first attempt.

When I took the test, I was given 5 lab scenarios right out of the gate. They were not intuitive, poorly explained, and confusing. I thought the whole test was going to be labs and started to panic. Finally after 5 it was all multiple choice. I was able to move through them quickly due to my studying and taking practice exams. With my remaining time I was able to go back to the labs and figure out what the hell they were asking for.

This practice exam book will help you ace the multiple choice part and also learn the material enough to decipher the horribly presented lab section.

Great supplement to a study guide.

I bought this book to supplement the CompTIA Security+ Study Guide: SY0-401. I liked that this book is ONLY practice exams. This is not a study guide but it does supplement a study guide nicely.

Great book to measure your readiness...

So I had been studying for the 301 exam during the last 3 months or so of 2014, and by the time I was ready to take it, Christmas was here and nobody had any spots open, so I was now looking at the 401 exam. I knew they had changed some things and added more, so I went looking around for a good practice exam book and picked this one up. I took the exam today and passed on the first shot. This book shouldn't be your only source of study, but if you have to re-certify or if you just want a good way to gauge your strengths and weaknesses, I would absolutely recommend this book. The questions are written on a difficulty level that matches that of the real exam, so it's a solid way to gauge your progress. Glad I picked this book up!

Photos to small to see in eBook

I purchased a Kindle eVersion of this book. I lasted maybe 15 minutes trying to read it and look at the photos. Words are useless without decent photos. The included B&W photos were literally thumbnail size making next to impossible to see what position the hands were in. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well the pictures here were not worth anything sad to say.

I do not understand why authors are so hesitant to use larger photos in their eBooks. The advantage of ebooks is unlimited page counts. Sure you have to be aware of the total size of the book for downloading, but with folks getting videos online that are over 100 megs, a 5-7 meg ebook with great photos would be worth gold!

As a trainer for the US Army, I also do technical documentation for a living. Part of my deliverable is to provide electronic versions of all documentation, this includes step by step how too manuals. My main focus is making sure the images are clear, large enough that the details can be seen and well laid out.

I really wanted to like this book, but you cannot learn just from words.

Outstanding explanation

This little primer is great. The black and white photos are clear and the instructions are accurate. I was really impressed that the second and third form was included with the dummy form. I am studying Wing Chun and have been for a long time now and really appreciate how thoroughly this author has approached this subject.
Great job. Order this and you won't regret it.
