About the Author

Peter Wallensteen is Senior Professor of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden, since 2012. He held the Dag Hammarskj�ld Chair of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University (1985–2012). He is also the Richard G. Starmann, Senior Research Professor of Peace Studies at the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA (since 2006). He directs the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) and the Special Program on International Targeted Sanctions (SPITS). His Understanding Conflict Resolution: War, Peace and the Global System (Sage, earlier edition, available also in an Arabic translation) is used in teaching around the world. His book Peace Research: Theory and Practice (Routledge 2011) demonstrates his range of research interests and has recently been translated into Chinese. Recently he also edited together with Ambassador Anders Bjurner Regional Organizations and Peacemaking: Challengers to the UN? (Routledge 2015). In 2010, he and Isak Svensson published The Go-Between (United States Institute of Peace Press), a study of mediation efforts by the renowned Swedish diplomat Jan Eliasson. Wallensteen has published widely on conflict trends, conflict resolution, mediation, prevention, sanctions and the United Nations.

Jennifer Jackson Preece is a Lecturer on Nationalism in Europe at the European Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science. Sponsor With Style

There are a number of books on personalities. I find this one better organized and more practical than others. Dr. Rohm's ability to simplify is most appreciated. His system of organizing the 4 basic personalities and orientations into "outgoing" and "reserved" with "task" and "people" orientation is simple to remember and easy to identify. His summary illustrations are excellent and assist the learning process. Although this book is written with the network marketing business in mind, it is applicable to all people.
As a physician, I have found that most college psychology and medical school psychiatry courses concentrate on the abnormal with little or no emphasis paid to the normal. After such courses we tend to think of the abnormal as nothing more than extreme extentions of the normal. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I recommend this book to all who wish to understand themselves and others better, achieve better relationships,and learn team building. We all have strengths and weaknesses. It is possible to learn to use our strengths in concert with others and turn our out-of-control weaknesses into strengths.

About the Author
Jay Friedenberg is Chair and Professor of the Psychology Department at Manhattan College, where he directs the Cognitive Science program. He obtained his Ph.D. in cognitive psychology in 1995 at the University of Virginia. He is interested in both vision and the philosophy of mind. He teaches courses in physiological psychology, learning and cognition, sensation and perception, and cognitive science. Dr. Friedenberg has published several articles on visual estimation of center of mass. His current research projects are investigating image statistics, picture perception, and the aesthetics of geometrical shapes. He has published books on artificial intelligence, chaos theory and psychology. He is a member of the Eastern Psychological Association, the Vision Science Society, The Psychonomic Society and Phi Beta Kappa.

Gordon Silverman is Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Manhattan College. His professional career spans more than 50 years of corporate, teaching, consulting, and research experience, during which he has developed a range of scientific instruments, particularly for use in physiological psychology research environments. He is the holder of eight patents, some related to behavior modification. The author of more than 20 journal articles and books, he has also served on the faculties of The Rockefeller University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. Dr. Silverman’s current research interests include telemedicine, rehabilitation medicine, artificial intelligence, and biomedical instrumentation and modeling.

DO NOT USE THIS TEXTBOOK

What a horrible book. If you are a professor looking for a textbook for an interdisciplinary cognitive science class, absolutely DO NOT use this one. If you want to learn anything about the subject, DO NOT buy it. This horrible excuse for a textbook was written by a couple of psychologists who obviously don't know the first thing about philosophy, AI, computer science, or any of the other topics they attempt to address. An inordinately large amount of text is devoted to a complete history of psychology, while philosophical issues crucial to the field are given the short shrift.

Not only is the material in the book of reprehensible quality, it is presented in an embarrassingly slipshod manner. I can't imagine how a publisher could print this book and still respect themselves. The illustrations from the book consist of clip art and worse, and consistently look pixelly and distorted. As if it weren't bad enough that the material is second-rate, it's cheaply presented with useless and confusing diagrams and tables.

All in all, my undergraduate class could have put together a better text. Throughout the course we were consistently correcting and refuting the text. Our professor only ordered it for the class because he had not read it. This book is a waste of time, money, trees, effort, and space. Avoid it at all costs.

Excuse my language, but this book sucks

I totally agree with the previous negative review, so I'll just add my own disappointments here. I am currently taking a cognitive science course, and this is the textbook we're using. It's new this year, and I have a hunch it won't be on the menu for next semester.

It seems like at least a third of the text in this book is dedicated to sentences like this: "We have just now read [topic A], which was [description of topic A], and next we will cover topic B, and after that we'll cover topic C." This fluff/dust makes the book hard to read, and there is very little "meat" in between.

Here's an actual quote that made me laugh out loud this morning: (page 167)

"Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT). This technique was first developed in the 1970s. [short explanation of what it is, then new paragraph: ] Positron Emission Tomography (PET). This imaging proceedure (developed in the 1980s) was developed later than computerized axial tomography." Well, how about that, they even attempt to teach me about time: the 1980s came after the 1970s!!

Don't buy this book.

Great introductory book for an extremely interdisciplinary field

For the amount of material it covers, this is a great book. I read it cover to cover and I've kept even after finishing my intro to Cognitive Science course because it is straightforward and covers all of the basics of modern cognitive science. There is much more breadth to it than Thagard's book Mind: Introduction to Cognitive Science, and Gazzaniga's Methods in Mind (although those are great books, they're more specific and more suited for upper level classes or as a supplement ot this book). I don't think the one star reviews are valid assessments; my major is Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology (it's a single interdisciplinary major at my school)and coming from a program with a heavier emphasis on philosophy than most cognitive science and psychology majors, I think it's unfair to demand that an introductory book like this delve too deeply into that aspect of the material. This gives a cursory explanation of the philosophical debates going on, but ultimately there's way too much going on in philosophy of the mind to be adequately introduced in a book that's also supposed to be giving an overview of cognitive psychology and neuroscience. To be fair, the text can get repetitive because the structure is the same througout the book, but that didn't keep me from reading it when I was taking the class. As a plus, the publisher's website offers some flashcards and review questions for each chapter which really helped me study for exams. If I were a cognitive science professor I'd use this for my intro class over Thagard's or Gazzaniga's.

An easy to read and in depth history of northern Africa

Bovill's THE GOLDEN TRADE OF THE MOORS provides a broad description of the history of North & West Africa from the Tell,

the high plateau and the Sahara to the Sahel, and from the Sudan to the bottom of North Africa's hump. Bovill, relying on

written history (and some archaeology), traces the history of northern Africa from pre-Carthaginian times to the

beginning of the 20th Century. We are introduced to Carthaginian interests in black slaves and Roman trade (and warfare)

with the Garamantes, Vandals, Byzantium's involvement in the region and the subsequent Arab conquest and spread of Islam,

the rise of Ghana and Mali, the Sanhaja Berber's Islamic puritan dynasty (Almoravids) which spread its control across

Northwest Africa and into Muslim Spain before being overthrown by the Almohads (another puritan sect), the Almoravid

invasion of Ghana, the rise of Timbuktu, the rise of the Songhai Empire, the (Moroccan) Al-Mansur's rise to power and

wealth and the invasion of the Sudan (especially of the Songhai Empire), the increasing independence of the the Berber

governors of the Sudan and the growing independence of the Arma (mulattoes), the rise of the Kanem and Bornu and of the

Hausa states, the Fulani religious and slave wars and their ultimate demise as the Europeans began to extend their control

over the region.

Northern Africa, as Bovill tells us, is occupied by both light-skinned and dark-skinned people. The former include the

late-coming Arabs and the ancient residents - the Berbers. The Berbers can be sub-divided into the Western tribes of the

Botr (including the Zenata who formed the important Marinid dynasty of Morocco), the Branes (including the very powerful

Sanhaja peoples), the numerous and widely spread Tuaregs of the central Sahara and a few other tribes. Of these, the first

two are westernmost and are generally called Moors (thereby distinguishing them from the more independent Tuaregs and the

Moriscos who returned from Spain during and after the Spanish reconquest of al-Andalus). The Tebu, Fezzanese and Haratins

and Zhagawas make up the majority of the people of the Sahara who were dark-skinned. Further South, various dark-skinned

people from the Wolofs of Senegambia, the Soninke (of ancient Ghana) the Mandingo (of ancient Mali) to the Songhai populated

the region.

Bovill also introduce us to the famous historian and legalist, Ibn Khaldun and various European and Muslim travelers through

the region: Ibn Battuta, Leo Africanus (al-Hassan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzani) and Mungo Park. The mutual importance of the

Berbers and Europeans in trade matters is also discussed. The Europeans needed gold (to trade in the East) and slaves from

Africa while the Berbers needed military and other goods for local and trans-Saharan warfare as well as silk, spices, sugar

and the like.

Although the book provides a substantial amount of information, it is sometimes a less than complete history. For example,

the rise of the Banu Marin (Marnids) and their dynasty in Morocco and Ottoman influence and control east of Morocco are

barely mentioned. On the other hand, the discussion of the arrival of the Bedouin tribes and their relation to the lack of

habitability of much of the Tell (Africa's Mediterranean coastline) was especially interesting.

Well written, easily read and highly informative, this book was well worth reading and should sit on the book shelf, next to

Hugh Thomas' TRANSATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE and Thornton's AFRICA AND AFRICANS IN THE MAKING OF THE ATLANTIC WORLD, of any

Africanist.

Part One surveys the fundamentals of Greek palaeography. Part Two, the heart of the book, is a collection of forty-five facsimile pages from thirteen manuscripts of the Old Testament and thirty-two manuscripts of the New Testament.

About the Author
Bruce M. Metzger is the George L. Collord Professor of New Testament Language and Literature Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. A past president of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas, he has made valuable contributions to the areas of textual criticism, philology, paleography, and translation.

Metzger was one of the greats

Great intro to Greek paleography with numerous examples. Although restricted to biblical Greek paleo this is a very good intro the methods of paleography in general. The Bible being probably the most studied of any ancient document. Metzger was arguably the last of the grand professors of the subject. Obscure for most people, recommended highly along with his other works on Biblical transmission and textual corruption. His bibliographies here and in his other books offer additional avenues for further study. Paleographical methods are not just limited to biblical research, but can be applied to other areas of literacy.

Good book, but bad reprint.

The book itself is very good; unfortunately the current printing being sold is a poor quality reprint by Oxford. The pages look like xerox copies (actually my own cheap personal copier makes better quality copies than Oxford made here). As a result, many of the plates are very hard or impossible to decipher. Very disappointing for an Oxford book: For $70+ the purchaser expects much better quality.

The original 1981 (uncorrected) printing (tan-colored binding) appears to be the best - the print quality of the plates is much better.

The early printings of the 1991-corrected reprint (tan-colored binding with dark-blue dust jacket) appear to be okay. The plates aren't as high resolution printing as the original 1981 edition, but they're much better than the latest (dark-blue binding, no dust jacket) 1991-corrected reprint.

The book itself I give 5 stars. The current reprint I give 1 star, after having the opportunity to compare it side-by-side with the two earlier printings.

Enlightening introduction to how ancient texts reached us

MANSCRIPTS OF THE GREEK BIBLE: An Introduction to Greek Paleography is a enlightening overview of how the Bible has come down to us written by noted New Testament scholar Bruce Metzger. It is, however, a work whose information goes beyond the New Testament, and the subtitle might as well be interchanged with the title, as with this work one can understand how many secular works in Greek were preserved to the modern day.

Metzger begins with a presentation of the Greek alphabet and its various styles. He gives a necessary explanation of Greek sounds, as a few later manuscript writers erroneously wrote some words based on their modern pronunciation instead of their ancient spelling. The idiosyncracies of the manuscript tradition, with its abundance of abbreviations, artistic colouring, glosses, and punctuation are spelled out in depth. I found Metzger's book most useful as I finally learned how publishers of the New Testament came to agreement on the division into chapters and verses. Of course, nearly all of this information is useful not only for people interested in the New Testament, but also for those who wonder how monks preserved other Greek-language works like, say, the plays of Aristophanes or the dialogues of Plato.

The core of Metzger's work is only 48 of the book's 140 pages. The remainder is a series of useful appendecies concerning dating of manuscripts, how to collate a manuscript, and various statistics. However, most entertaining is a series of 45 plates of manuscript pages with detailed analysis. The utter variety of version gives the reader an appreciation of scholars like Nestle and Aland who strived to create the best standard text.

I wasn't too happy with the book's folio format which, though it allows some of the plates to be reproduced closer to their original size, makes the book unwieldy and inconsistent with most of OUP's output. Nonetheless, MANUSCRIPTS OF THE GREEK BIBLE is quite a enjoyable introduction to the work of paleographym, and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in New Testament textual issues as well as budding classicists.

He’d tried everything that he could think of so he would have to resort to old-fashioned trickery. He was taking her on an expedition to the glacier that he’d found. They would be out there alone for a week and she would be his, he was looking forward to taming that temper.

A lot happened

For such a short book a lot happened. My issues with it are the grammatical errors that took away from the story and things that did not seem to match up time wise.

Spoilers
My first major issue is how can someone not find someone else in this day and age. Neither main character could do it for years. The h did not tell the H about his kids for 5 years.

The other issue was the H's brother wasn't even mated and then 2 years later was mated with five kids. When did that happen.

I love this story. I could not put it down. This is so suspenseful and interesting. A very unique story line, it is different from other books even by this author. So much in a short story, but not rushed or missing something.

Liked it but then in a way I didn't. It would seem to me that this would of been a better short story than anything. And in all honesty I really don't like short stories.
