Well-written, and completely applicable to current events...

Quite often I'll read a book that I think is very well done, with truths that resonate with me. But less often do I find that book at a time when it fits so well with current events. One such book is The Integrity Dividend: Leading by the Power of Your Word by Tony Simons. As we watch corporations and financial systems crumble under the weight of unethical and dishonest actions, Simons presents a truth that is too often neglected in the workplace. But even more, everything that you read here also applies to your personal life. I know I find myself falling woefully short in this area, and am convicted to change.

In order to lead effectively, you have to have credibility. And in order to have credibility, you have to deliver on what you promise or say you will do, as well as behaving consistently with those words and promises. It's this premise on which The Integrity Dividend is based. Leaders in business (and really in all types of organizations) can only be effective if the people following them know that there is no gap between what you say and what you do. This type of leadership has many benefits, not the least of which is financial. Staff who know they can rely on their leadership to do as they say will be more loyal and effective in what they do. This translates to higher performance within the business, as well as more satisfied customers. The "corporation" also must have integrity, such as following through on promises they make to the public (like no-questions-asked guarantees). If the public finds that your actions are not consistent with the promises or image, then they will quickly find another company that is. Likewise, if you and the company are seen to have complete behavioral integrity between what you do and say, their loyalty will know few bounds.

Rather than keep everything on what could be a purely academic or theoretical level, Simons relates all his work back to actual real-life situations. This makes it very easy to follow his train of thought, and adds a level of credibility to his ideas. He's also not afraid to say that some areas have no good answers. For instance, a middle manager can often be stuck between a decision from on high that violates his personal views and positions. But ultimately, the choice quite often comes down to follow the decision because everyone needs to be on the same page, or leave your position because you're crossing a line that you will not violate. Unfortunately, there aren't always easy answers to problems, and Simons acknowledges that.

For me personally, I have been struggling with the "sure, I can do that" promise. Instead of saying no or setting realistic expectations, I say that I intend to do "x" in the near future. Then when I can't deliver because of over-commitment, I feel bad and the customer suffers. I have a lot of work to do on improving my behavioral integrity, and I appreciate the work that Tony Simons has done in The Integrity Dividend to help me in that area.

Factual and Motivational

Usually issues like integrity, honesty and ethical conduct are considered things that derive from personal standards and values. Almost every MBA program or advanced degree in business has the obligatory nod in this direction through the inclusion of some form of class on ethics. Through that medium is conveyed the obligatory case studies of Enron and other spectacular failures that testify to the high price paid when corporate greed and expediency rise above basic rules of ethical conduct.

Tony Simons approaches things from a more grass roots and practical direction however. Rather than the abstract appeal to doing right for its own sake that is usually the domain of religion and other moral institutionalize value systems, Simons very simply ties these issues to day to day management and the bottom line.

With very little fanfare and in an organized and scientific manner Simons prefaces the anecdotal presentations that are standard fare for a book of this nature with a study that demonstrates that within the Hotel Service industry there is a direct correlation between the perceived integrity of management and the profitability of a local hotel or chain. In other words, the "street knowledge" that good guys don't get ahead and it's the people willing to cut corners to get the job done who win out in the end, generally is not true and Simon's study statistically demonstrates that issues such as employee morale, vendor trust and customer satisfaction derive in part from a corporate environment that is based in part upon how well these different parties perceive the personal integrity and word of leadership.

From this foundation then, Simons proceeds to share the softer elements turned up in his study in a manner reminiscent of the folksy, chatty type of literature that is standard fare in this genre. What is different however and important to highlight is that Simons has in fact already done the heavy lifting in chapter 1 to show that this is more than mere lip service. A reasonable foundation has been laid that demonstrates that personal integrity, as perceived by these different stakeholders in the Hotel Service industry, ties directly to profitability in a manner that allows of measure of what typically are seen as "soft costs" but in reality are shown to be cumulative and to tie into issues that in fact are hard wired into the process, such as employee retention, vendor willingness to work with extraordinary circumstances right down to customer satisfaction and repeat business even where these background factors aren't usually measured and directly correlated.

Of course, it can be argued that this study is industry specific and these factors perhaps amplified in such an obviously service based industry such as the Hotel and Restaurant focus from which Simons is coming. Simons does an excellent job however of reasonably expanding the base of his study to provide insights and strong cause and effect evidence that extend to where any level of management or leadership in any industry will find value in reading this well written book.

This book is more valuable to the reader than the typical case studies of large scale failures at the high corporate level because it demonstrates in an understandable way how these issues impact your personal effectiveness and your company's bottom line to where a reader will walk away not only motivated but also equipped as to how to bring about change in their personal lives and careers.

Excellent business book on a relevant and important topic

The Integrity Dividend is about leading with integrity and how doing so has been proven to have a direct effect on profitability.

But, it goes much further than just describing a tie between the power of keeping one's word as a manager (either as an individual or part of the management team) and the bottom line. It also goes into the difficulties of maintaining integrity -- how easy it is to mislead people and the struggle to regain integrity once it's been lost. The author talks about how to prevent such pitfalls, how being direct and honest effects the overall atmosphere of an organization and how to untangle messes that have already occurred. He discusses both middle and upper management, how middle managers can get stuck looking bad if upper management sends down a directive that creates a moral dilemma and how to potentially handle such directives. And, he goes into the benefits of performance appraisals when they're handled with humor and honesty, how things can go wrong and how to avoid misleading employees if appraisals aren't handled well. He even talks about the fact that "American managers may be particularly susceptible to giving lopsidedly positive feedback."

Excellent subject, beautifully presented. I'm a big fan of honesty and integrity in business and I think it's often the lack of integrity in management that creates a hostile work environment, so I love the topic. This particular book has a little bit of a textbook flavor. It took me a while to adjust to the style and some of the terminology that I haven't dealt with in recent years; but it's written with intelligence and clarity. The author throws in a tremendous amount of appropriate examples and stories to help the reader translate principles into reality. Also, each chapter is nicely summarized and closes with questions to consider and principles to act upon, in order to help leaders put the advice in this book into practice.

There's a lot to like about this book. The author is very blunt about the fact that managers and employees are human, and there are inherent flaws in communication between humans. Instead of just tossing out a bunch of key words and catch phrases, he talks about how to be a person employees trust -- how to build credibility -- but he also talks about what can go wrong, how easy it is to confuse employees or lose their trust. You know the dreaded "mission statement" people are often supposed to know by heart but which often is frankly meaningless? He talks about how important it is to make it clear what your goals and values are but keep them simple and memorable: "Promise less, but do it more often." He talks about repetition and how repeating a company's values helps to unify employees and solidify their purpose.

It can be a tiny bit dry, at times, but there are so many examples interspersed throughout the book that it never put me to sleep.

An excellent resource for managers at all levels.

Although this new history of same-sex desire does not offer the long, satisfying narratives of Lillian Faderman's Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers or the sweep of David Greenberg's The Construction of Homosexuality, it does provide a solid introduction to the subject. Tantalizing fragments from the 17th and 18th centuries are joined with later evidence to flesh out Rupp's vision, which draws on Native American and African practices as well as the culture brought to (and imposed on) America by the Europeans. While surveying the more familiar history of gay culture in the cities, she also describes the growth of small, hidden lesbian and gay communities in places as unlikely as Salt Lake City, far removed from the urban centers of vice. Rupp also surveys changes in attitude toward same-sex love within academia in the last 50 years, as well as in American culture at large, and provides a useful bibliography. --Regina Marler

While most books on gay and lesbian history tend to be scholarly, at times informed by postmodern analysis that can make them challenging for the general reader, Rupp's survey of four centuries of "same-sex love in America" is, by contrast, extremely accessible. By way of introducing her material, this professor of history at Ohio State University writes very personally about her lesbian aunt, Leila; her own coming out; and her work in the lesbian and gay community, as well as a range of contemporary issues such as antigay political initiatives and gay male urban sexual cultures. The bulk of the book, however, is an engaging but cursory look at such highlights of same-sex desire in U.S. culture as Walt Whitman's life and poetry, Emily Dickinson's "romantic friendship" with her sister-in-law, gender variations among Native American berdaches, the importance of WW II in helping gay men and lesbians come out and the growth of national gay communities. While Rupp invokes the standard sources for gay and lesbian history, including the work of Allan B?rube, Esther Newton, George Chauncey, Jonathan Katz and Lillian Faderman, she tends to summarize them rather than build new or larger arguments; there is little new research here. A highly regarded scholar of women's history, Rupp has produced a version of gay American history that's suitable even for young adult readers (the promotional material refers to it as "breezy"). As much as it might be needed, it's an odd offering from a university press. (Sept.)

Rupp (history and women's studies, Ohio State Univ.) presents a synthesis of the work of many historians who have investigated same-sex sexuality. She provides brief accounts of the lives of people throughout American history who in some way demonstrated same-sex desire, from early Native Americans to Walt Whitman and through the aftermath of the Stonewall riot. She offers explanation and analysis of how these people and their experiences reveal prevailing attitudes toward homosexuality in the times and places they lived. Rupp acknowledges her debt to other writers, especially Jonathan Katz (whose Gay American History: Lesbians and Gay Men in the U.S.A., Plume, 1992, includes many more profiles and primary sources, though less analysis). Excellent general overview

This fall semester (2001), I will be teaching a course in Lesbian and Gay history at my community college. In preparation for this course, I looked at many different books, hoping to find an ideal survey text for an introductory course in GLBT history. Alas, Rupp's book falls short of the ideal -- but is nonetheless the best brief introduction to the history of same-sex sexuality available on the market today. I will be using her book in my class this fall.
What I appreciate about this text is her almost seamless interweaving of personal experience with historical narrative. I realize that traditionalists tend to find this practice either unprofessional or self-indulgent (or both), but I delight in it. More importantly, I have noted that my students respond very well to history texts that do not shy away from the highly personal.
Rupp does a good job of giving a quick overview of the "essentialist" and "constructionist" schools of thought among the historians of sexuality. Perhaps best of all, she insists on the use of the term "same-sex sexuality" rather than Lesbian or Gay, recognizing that the latter terms are perhaps too easily associated with the essentialist argument.
All in all, a brief but well-constructed text, ideal (I hope) for the classroom and for the curious general reader.

As a critical examination of the relationship between linguistic style and literary identity in America's greatest woman poet, Emily Dickinson: A Poet's Grammar provides a significant addition to feminist literary studies.

Terrific Help To Understand Emily Dickinson

Cristanne Miller, who is now English department head at State University of New York in Buffalo, authored this book before she was such a giant among Emily Dickinson scholars and professors. It's easy to see in this fairly early work why Miller has found such high regard in literary circles. Aspects of Dickinson's strategies are organized and approached very systematically. Without assuming that she can divine the mind of Dickinson, Miller takes her readers as nearly inside the tactical thoughts of the poet as I think is possible. Those who enjoy Emily Dickinson poetry will thank their lucky stars for the "leg up" on understanding the poems after reading "A Poet's Grammar."

An Amazing Adventure You Can't Put Down!

I liked Camp X very much. It was full of action. It's about a couple of boys (older than me, I'm 10)who discover a camp for spies. They get into a lot of trouble but always manage to get out of tight squeezes. It takes place in Whitby Ontario during the Second World War. I live in Whitby, so I recognised some of the places in the book. This is the first book I've read by Eric Walters. It's definitely not going to be the last. But first, I'm going to do a book report on this book for my grade 5 class.

Great Mystery Book

Once I started reading this book it was hard to stop. Two boys were pretending to play war on a road where one was Canadian and the other was a Nazi. They were trying to go home but get stopped by a Jeep. That is how they find the spy camp. They have no idea what is going on in the camp, so they try to find out more and get caught. They get taken to the leader. They think they're in a lot of trouble but end up helping the camp do a few "jobs." They end up finding out one of they're friends is a Nazi spy. They get kidnapped by him and interrogated. Then the other Nazi spies come in and hit them. They end up telling them everything. I can't tell you anymore because then that would ruin the book, and you would probably get mad at me. It is a great book if you like action mysteries. This book has great entertainment and excitement. The details in Camp X are very specific, so you can almost feel what is going on in the story. This book is full of great action. I'd give this book five stars.

My 11-year old son read the entire book today (at school). He loved the story. It showed him how young boys could be useful to the Canadian Army during World War II.

This book was an awakening for me. While reading it, I was seriously skeptical, but decided to give it a try. Ordered charcoal powder and capsules and I am happy to say I was amazed at the benefits of both. Excess gas and stomach discomfort, was eliminated by the capsules. I had been considering knee replacement surgery, but here again I was delightfully pleased. Made a poultice for my knee and within minutes the pain was gone, and it stayed gone until two days later. I am in the process of rebuilding knee cartilage with help from healthmasters.com.
God has given us everything we need, but that need doesn't include pharmaceuticals, which are man made poisons. Choose wisely.

NOT formatted for the Kindle

The very first clue that something was amiss was when I noticed the "I" in "Introduction" was missing. It went downhill from there. After scanning through the entire book, I could not find ONE complete sentence, paragraph, or cogent thought.

While the hardback edition may offer valid points to the use of Activated Carbon, I will not know by reading this electronic version.

Two thumbs down.

The fundamental purpose of this book is to systematically explain the pathophysiology behind arterial stiffness, to relate arterial stiffness with high blood pressure, and also to draw insights into the management of arterial stiffness from the current clinical and experimental research evidence in the field. Set out systematically, the book provides a readable and concise introduction to arterial stiffness and progressively moves into explaining more complex theoretical and experimental developments in the area. The book is designed such that each chapter largely answers a particular scientific question - covering the most up-to-date research information, investigations, and summaries and conclusions relating to the initial question. Future directions and research opportunities in the field are also covered. The book covers the most recent in vivo assessments of aortic stiffness in different phenotypes by measuring local haemodynamic parameters, pulse wave velocity, and pulse pressure amplification. Furthermore, the book relates ex vivo arterial structural properties and explains how they are relevant to arterial stiffness measurement, while also analysing recent pharmacological treatments of hypertension and assessing if these treatments have any effect on arterial stiffness in addition to treating blood pressure alone. Finally, the text offers a summary and appraisal of the methodologies used in experimental quantification of arterial stiffness.

Keith Ng is an emerging scientist in the area of physiology and bioengineering. His primary research interests involve investigating the role of hemodynamics in vascular biology and physiology, particularly the pathophysiology of increased large arterial stiffening in hypertension. Thomas Ashley-Farrand (1940 - 2010)

Thomas Ashley-Farrand was one of the West s foremost authorities of Vedic and Buddhist Sanskrit mantras. He was recognized for his flawless mastery of mantra practice by swamis, pundits, and shastris across India, and gathered more than 8,000 transliterated mantras the most comprehensive body of these sacred sound syllables in the English language. He received initiations and blessings from a number of prominent spiritual teachers, including H.H. the Dalai Lama. His guru was Sadguru Sant Keshavadas of Bangalore, India, and he also followed Guru Mata, Sant Keshavadas widow, to whom he transferred spiritual authority on the banks of the Ganges before his passing. In addition, Thomas Ashley-Farrand was an expert in the practice of Vedic fire and water rituals. His published works include "Mantra Meditation, Healing Mantras, Mantra Meditation for Creating Abundance, " and more."

An advanced beginners guide to Sanskrit Mantras and related concepts.

This CD set is highly recommended for anyone interested in Sanskrit Mantras. Absolute beginners to mantras might want to start with the Healing Mantras book and CD set by Thomas Ashley-Farrand, (see my Amazon review).

Those of us in the West will find no better guide to Sanskrit mantras than the works of Thomas Ashley-Farrand. He presents the topic of mantras as one born and raised in Western culture, fully understanding our point of view and how to present this branch of knowledge to us. The mantras, when presented in a written form on the included booklet, are in plain transliterated ASCII-English based text, and the author's voice is clear and understandable.

The subject of Sanskrit Mantras is broken into several logical groups including Masculine and Feminine based mantras, Avatar mantras, and Buddhist mantras to name a few. It contains at least two very powerful healing mantas, mantras for abundance, to remove obstacles, for education and learning, and several for enlightenment. The concepts of chakras, karma, what we refer to as gods and goddesses, and higher realms of existence are covered and explained clearly for those of us not previously familiar with these ideas.

About sixty mantras are presented, and the material is about an advanced-beginners level study guide on the subject. This work was my second introduction to mantras, and at the time I was ecstatic to have found such a rich source of material on a subject rarely presented in the West.

Mantra - Sacred Words of Power is a logical follow up to Healing Mantras. While I might have recommended the 14 CD set Mantra - A Path to Spiritual and Material Attunement instead, Amazon does not carry it at this time. This 6 CD set is a perfectly fine alternative, and the one I personally used a decade ago. Unlike Healing Mantras which is for people with no background in Sanskrit mantras, not as much effort is put forth to emphasize pronunciation. For many people this will not be a problem as the author's mantra chanting is easy to understand.

Suggested reading after this includes the author's two books, Chakra Mantras, and Shakti Mantras, as well as his many mantra-chanting CD's. The CD's that include the titles Mantra Therapy / Healing Intensive each have a carefully selected set of mantras to aid with specific issues many of us encounter in life. Amazon has many selections of the published works by Thomas Ashley-Farrand, and is a good place to begin looking for his most well-known materials.

After hearing this from a friend, I knew I had to get my own copy of "Mantra...". This really breaks down the whole idea of mantra...what it is, how it works, what it can do for you. The author has a very interesting voice, and the included manual is very through. Even though there are 6 CD's there are lot's more "sections" of instruction. This is fun and easy to listen too. I find myself going back to sections of it almost daily. And I have added Mantras to my meditation practice with a far greater understanding than I ever had. If Mantras interest you for any reason, don't miss this!

Outstanding Value; Masterful

This six audio tape series (with study guide) is an excellent progression from Thomas Ashley-Farrand's beginners and Healing Mantra's series. I was wary of it repeating some of his entry level products on Sanskrit Mantra and I was happy to be proved wrong. This series builds knowledge, and goes a few steps deeper into such things as the seed mantras, karma, Avatars, masculine and feminine energies, attunements, physical organs, and the Gayatri Mantra. It does this without losing the benefits of the beginner's series, yet it also stands on its own. Its an elegant expression of what amounts to an incredibly dynamic and wise system of ancient spiritual practice.

A very well structured series, its easy to learn and to find specific areas of interest including a section on Tibetan Buddhism. Thomas Ashley-Farrand's passion and commitment is apparent to anyone willing to listen.

Its also a wise choice for audio tapes instead of 6 x CD's because if you're like me, I don't have a CD stacker in my car!
