Vietnam is still O'Brien's theme, but in this book he seems less interested in the war itself than in the myriad different perspectives from which he depicts it. Whereas Going After Cacciato played with reality, The Things They Carried plays with truth. The narrator of most of these stories is "Tim"; yet O'Brien freely admits that many of the events he chronicles in this collection never really happened. He never killed a man as "Tim" does in "The Man I Killed," and unlike Tim in "Ambush," he has no daughter named Kathleen. But just because a thing never happened doesn't make it any less true. In "On the Rainy River," the character Tim O'Brien responds to his draft notice by driving north, to the Canadian border where he spends six days in a deserted lodge in the company of an old man named Elroy while he wrestles with the choice between dodging the draft or going to war. The real Tim O'Brien never drove north, never found himself in a fishing boat 20 yards off the Canadian shore with a decision to make. The real Tim O'Brien quietly boarded the bus to Sioux Falls and was inducted into the United States Army. A true war story...

Well written story that depicts the Vietnam War through the eyes of a soldier fighting on the front lines. Delves deeply into the psyche of the writter, depicting his struggles of going off to war and then coming home again. Speaks greatly to the bonds that are forged on the battlefield between soldiers. I leave the best summary of the book to a quote from the writer:
"A true war story is never moral. It does not instruct, nor encourage virtue, nor suggest models of proper human behavior, nor restrain men from doing the things men have always done. If a story seems moral, do not believe it. If at the end of a war story you feel uplifted, or if you feel that some small bit of rectitude has been salvaged from the larger waste, then you have been made the victim of a very old and terrible lie. There is no rectitude whatsoever. There is no virtue. As a first rule of thumb, therefore, you can tell a true war story by its absolute and uncompromising allegiance to obscenity and evil."

Best Book On Viet Nam War

This is the best treatment of what the Viet Nam war was really like for the grunts on the front lines. I related to each character and felt great empathy for their losses and the cruelty they not only endured by were required to dispense. The last chapter on death was worth the price of the entire book.

Easy, engaging, and overall a fun read.

Had to buy this book as part of the required reading for American lit. Didn't expect much since I could care less about the Vietnam war. The book itself is a real beauty - the pages have a vinegary smell and a nice texture suitable for an enjoyable reading experience. The cover is a nice velvety-satin texture that is comfortable on the hands.
On to the text. The first story - The Things They Carried - gripped me right away with it's simple prose yet mysterious mood. The next stories wouldn't dissapoint - Tim O'Brien kept me floored with this writing (though it got pretentious at times). I would find out later on that this book really isn't about the Vietnam War at all, but the effects of it. O'Brien gives us a psychological look into the minds of the soldiers who are trapped in a "living hell".
I was a bit disappointing though that the stories were part true and part false - but I don't think The Things They Carried can get any better than what it is now.
