A good tool for test prep.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is the intellectual part of the the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT). The test is "curved" which means that a raw score is converted to a cumulative distribution where you are ranked against approximately 6000 test takers, so a score of 95 on the test means you scored better than 95% of other test takers. This means that the raw score (percentage of questions answered correctly) does not reflect the curved score. For example, if the test is very easy perhaps 50% of candidates will score 85% on the test. This means that a raw score of 85% on this hypothetical easy test will actually give you a curved score of 50. To get into certain parts of the armed services requires better than a median (50) AFQT performance (Air force, Coast Guard, Marines, SEALS, Special Forces and Special Operations) in the core areas of Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematical Knowledge (MK), Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC). So candidates seeking entry into those areas will want to be well prepared for the test. Understanding instructions is a survival skill in the military, so verbal expression (VE), which is composed of (PC+WK) and receives double weight in computation of the final AFQT score. "So what?" You might ask. Consider these two hypothetical candidates: Candidate A scores 99 on the AR and MK test, but 0 on both WK and PC, while candidate B score 0 on AR and MK, but 99 on WK and PC. Candidate A will have an AFQT of 33 while candidate B will have an AFQT of 66. This means candidate B will likely be able to enter any service of their choice, while candidate A may not be able to get into any service. Though such a scenario is unlikely, it is demonstrates the importance of addressing weaknesses in the VE tests to getting a higher AFQT and thus giving you more military career options.

This is a very comprehensive test guide that combines DVD video (which are also available online), flash cards and practice tests (in the book and online). The book starts with practice tests for you to get a sense of where your current performance is. The core ( AR,MK, and VE) and AO, contain nothing that someone with a high school education would not know however, the technical sub-tests do require some specific knowledge that is outside a standard school curriculum. Though source material for the tests is not covered doing the questions should help you look-up the information you need to study.

As with all timed tests, speed getting to the correct answer is a factor, so strategies are covered that allow you to eliminate incorrect answers quickly. There is also guidance for your pretest prep and dealing with test stress. The book covers the difference between the computer-adaptive testing (CAT) and the traditional pencil and paper test to help with you tune your test preparation.

Great ASVAB study guide

When enlisting in the military your ASVAB score will determine what jobs and opportunities are open to you. When you have a good ASVAB score you will be given more career path choices, which is why it is so important to be prepared for and to do well on this test. Kaplan's 2016 Premier ASVAB study guide will gives the guidance and skills needed to get a much higher score on the test. I highly recommend purchasing this book and taking advantage of all it has to offer.

This book was very helpful and informative. The timed practice test were a great way to study and maximize my efforts. The book will guide you through how to study and gives explanations when you get wrong answers. I took my test two weeks after getting the book and made a 84 AFQT score.

Martin Luther King to the fore and paving the way for the dramatic protests and confrontations that finally brought profound racial changes as well as two-party politics to the South.

Insight into Southern History offers complexity of Southern Identity

Cobb offers great insight to southern history post-WWII. He covers everything: politics, economics, culture, religion, arts, ideology, internal conflict, hypocrisy, identity, and evolution. At times, his information is unorganized and scattered. He also offers a lot of data without always creating solid context for it; he expects you to figure it out. Most chapters are enjoyable and informative. A few are tedious and take a little effort to get through. As a southern reviewer, it's a great collection of information on the "modern" South, both its contributions to the betterment of the country, as well as its hindrances.

The South since WWII

The book came today, it was earlier than expected. The book is in very good condition; no underlining or marking inside. While I have yet to read the book the reviews are excellent. A friend and I will have completed a joint reading of the South beginning with Cash's Mind of the South, picking up recent history with Reconstruction to the present day Hats off to the seller.

About the Author

Ralph Taggart, former Chair of Biological Sciences at Michigan State University, is now the chair of Geological Sciences. Professor Taggart, known for his outstanding research in Paleobotany, has taught General Biology for over 20 years.

Worst texbook I've ever used

This book may be fine for an 18-19 year old kid who just had high school biology a couple of years ago, but for those of us who haven't had a science class in 10+ years it's borderline useless. Each chapter opens as if it is aimed at a grade school level audience, only to switch gears after four pages and diving into complex descriptions of chemical reactions, yet failing completely to explain or define many important points.
A fine example of this shortcoming can be seen in chapter 6 which deals with photosynthisis. The reader is introduced to NADP+ and NADPH, yet there is no definition of of what either are and it's not very clear as to what exactly they do. A simple web search, however, results in a succinct answer to both what they are and what they do.
I feel that for the price of this book (your first born child, plus an arm and a leg) that it should be more thorough and clear in its explanations.

Funny Book, Great Gift Idea for the Holidays

As a fan of The Middle, I knew Eden Sher was a hilarious actor, but now I know she's a hilarious writer, too. The Emotionary is perfect as a comedic coffee table book or for that person in your life who has all of the feelings and can't quite put them into words. The comics by Julia Werz are a perfect match for Sher's absurdly real feeling descriptions. I've now bought it for my sister and mom and couldn't recommend it more. Five stars.

I'm happy to share my thoughts on the book, Men Cry In The Dark, written by Michael Baisden. With the many issues we face between striving to establish a life for ourselves and our families, this book has the components of the all too real modern day issues, wrapped in an entertaining story line. One stand out personality is of the charismatic character, Derrick, who fulfills the role of the eye-catching corporate employee turned businessman. As an adored single parent, Tony possesses the special qualities of an overall nice guy who's constantly being challenged by his bitter ex, Valerie. As one who roots his current interests based on previous negative experiences, Mark chooses to date all races but his own. Through his demonstrated anger, unforgiveness and resentment we learn how one's mindset can ultimately lead them down an unexpected path based on the past. No matter what character you most relate to, Michael Baisden shares a straightforward view of relationships that many of us experience, but not often enough take the time to step back and review. Through sharing the journey of these characters, we relate to our own choices. Over the years, my friends and I have opened up many discussions based on the many issues presented in this book, and I will continue to use it as a topic-starter for more fun, yet inspiring dialogues to come. I most recommend this book as a tool to help encourage the discussion of not only what we relate to and why, but what motivates us to learn how to move on in a healthy and profitable way.

Very disappointing!!!!!

This book is a quick read as it keeps you wondering what happens next. But sadly it has a lot of stereotypical themes that I am tired of reading about....sex crazed cheating self absorbed men, money hungry back stabbing women, European standards of beauty, historians...... you get my point? The book has few redeeming qualities if any. The author could have been more creative in his writing and less vulgar
with his language. Nothing memorable about this book.

Left Hanging

There is definitely a story here and this book left me hungry for more of Mr. Baisden's books. I said to myself, "he can do better than this."

I had a hard time following the story and getting into it at first and just when I was all into it and was like, yeah I freakin' knew it!, it was over. I was left hanging. Really dude you just left me hanging like that?

I wanted more!! There's something so real about his characters and their stories I just knew there was something he was holding back.

So downloaded and am now reading, "The Maintenance Man, Collectors Edition" it captured my attention page one!! Thought provoking, deep, and real. You don't know whether to love the men or hate them. A relationship eye opener between both friends and lovers. Great sentiment and a Great read! It'll open your mind.

I'm looking forward to reading his entire collection.

Five Days You Won't Forget

The first half of this book reads like an apocalyptic thriller while the second half is like a legal drama and in fact was dramatized on the television show, Boston Legal.
The tragedy that occurred at Memorial Hospital in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is unflinchingly detailed by the author. The horrors that the staff and patients had to face will haunt you. The actions that were taken to save lives was heroic. There were also decisions made, however, that led to at least 7 deaths. Were these unavoidable casualties of the disaster or were these people murdered to effect a long overdue rescue of the remaining patients and staff?
The questions surrounding the deaths led to an investigation of one doctor and a couple of nurses. This legal investigation is what comprises the second half of the book.
The author, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, gives a fair and complete assessment of the five day ordeal in the storm ravaged hospital. There is also background information for many of the staff and some patients who were stranded in the flood. There were points that actually had me near tears as I read of their struggles.
The investigation after the incident and the legal battles which ensued are equally as compelling. The political machine that took over so much of the Katrina recovery is a big part of the story. The reader is left to come to his own conclusion based on the information given. Through the stellar reporting of this author, it is easy to empathize with both sides in some respects. Was euthanasia necessary? I'm not going to go into my own personal beliefs but I will say that you will look at the whole situation differently after reading this book.
You will also be forced to take a look at the choices available to us as the end of life approaches.
Five Days at Memorial is a compelling book that documents a particularly horrible natural disaster and the mess that our government and some corporations made of the rescue process. You can't read this and not be changed. It isn't a story that has a happy ending but it's the kind of thing that needs a light shown on it so that, hopefully, we learn a valuable lesson from the mistakes that were made.

For those prepared to grapple with major ethical issues

This is not the type of book that anyone should pick up if they are not prepared to deal with some extremely grim realities. Although certainly all of us have heard, and some of us have experienced personally, the horrors resulting from "natural disasters", Sheri Fink's exhaustively detailed description of events at Memorial Hospital in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina is uniquely powerful.

This is a book that SHOULD make one angry as well as profoundly and deeply distressed. It is also a fascinating investigation of the evolution of human perspective as "technical medicine" has become ever more complex and infrastructure-dependent. It includes an extraordinarily focused discussion of the historical issues - the fact that this hospital was flooded previously, but the necessary upgrades to provide better protection for the backup generators as recommended was never accomplished, being the most cogent.

For anyone who is not aware of the background story: As well as having a complement of "regular" patients, some in Intensive Care after such things as open heart and cancer surgery, the hospital had an organization called LifeCare that leased space on the 7th floor of the main hospital complex. Their patients were mostly elderly, and were in long-term care for extremely debilitating conditions that required extensive life support and monitoring, including dialysis, tube feeding, ongoing oxygen therapy, and so on. When the hurricane first approached, on Saturday, August 27, 2005, it seemed wise to move LifeCare patients in from a less secure, smaller facility in St. Bernard Parish, to the much larger location at Memorial. In addition many others, including family members of hospital staff and patients, along with their pets, and some other community members, sought refuge at the hospital, which was deemed to be a safe location. Therefore when the hurricane actually struck on Sunday, August 28th, there were many more people in residence than the normal load.

There was considerable damage from the storm itself, but everything seemed to be on target for recovery until the flooding of Monday, as of course was the story for the entirety of New Orleans. Sadly, at this point, the failure to upgrade the generators became a very serious issue, and for the following four days, conditions went from difficult to impossible to horrific. It became obvious as power failed and violence and looting became ever more prevalent in the surrounding neighborhoods that rescue and evacuation was not going to be practical, especially for the most severely debilitated patients. Although the hospital DID have a helipad, which turned out to be marginally accessible, for some reason it never seemed possible to launch a major evacuation by air. Eventually, on the fourth day (Thursday), when rescue efforts seemed completely stalled and many of the "critical" patients were rapidly deteriorating due to the extreme heat, lack of support systems for their therapies, and so on, the decision was made that anyone who had a DNR order in place and was not easily transportable would be given an overdose of morphine. The second half of the book deals with the legal repercussions faced by the medical professionals who made these fatal decisions.

Obviously, in past eras when the "promise" of high tech medicine was not so deeply ingrained in the minds of both the medical community and the general public, these issues would not have arisen. People who were terminally ill would either not even BE in a hospital setting, or if they were, it would be clear that removing them would be inevitable, whether they died in the process or not. One of the poignant scenes in the narrative is the story of the euthanizing of some of the pets who had been brought to the hospital for shelter "because there was no room for them in the rescue vehicles". At that point, it struck me as symbolic that perfectly healthy animals, considered "family" by many of their humans, were summarily executed for lack of "space". Meanwhile, there was all the agonizing about the failure to find room in those same vehicles for admittedly terminal humans with their wheelchairs and other "paraphernalia", and the subsequent choice of the medical professionals to ease (while perhaps speeding up) the passing of those humans.

I would recommend Fink's book only to those who are prepared to be courageous in thinking about these torturous life-and-death issues, and who really want to grapple with some of the major ethical concerns of our era.

As good as The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Fink takes on a story with moral and ethical overtones- what killed 45 patients at Memorial Hospital in New Orleans in the days following Hurricane Katrina, in her incredibly fascinating Five Days at Memorial. Fink interviewed dozens of people who were there- doctors, nurses, aides, family members, patients, hospital administrators, rescuers, police investigators, coroners and more to tell her gripping story.

Fink drops the reader right into the hospital during the hurricane and in the horrific aftermath of the storm, when the levees failed and the hospital was completely surrounded by floodwaters. The reader feels the rising panic as generators fail, toilets stop working, medicines run low, cell phones die and communication is lost with the outside world.

Close to 200 people were evacuated from the hospital by helicopter and boats, but 45 patients died, most of them either terminally or gravely ill, the most of any hospital in the city. And most of them died of an overdose of morphine and Versed, allegedly by the hands of Dr. Anna Poe, a surgeon at the hospital. She and two nurses were arrested for killing those patients after a lengthy investigation.

Fink methodically lays out what went on at the hospital during those days. The corporate owner of the hospital, TenetCare, had an emergency plan that lacked some key elements. After 9/11, hospitals had to beef up emergency plans.
"The doctors at Memorial had drilled for disasters, but for scenarios like a Sarin gas attack, modeled that April, where multiple patients arrived at the hospital at once. Not in all his years of practice had Thiele drilled for the loss of backup power, running water, and transportation."
They had no contract with helicopter companies to evacuate the hospital (as other hospitals did) during a flood in a city where hurricanes and floods can be devastating. The person left in charge in the home office of Houston had no disaster experience or training, and the lack of communication with the hospital during the crisis was unconscionable.

The staff at Memorial felt they had been abandoned by their owners, as well as by their government. There seemed to be no one in charge at a local, state or federal level who could give them information as to when and how they would evacuate. All they heard were rumors of rampant looting, and the gunfire they could hear in the neighborhood made them fear they would be overrun by criminals looking for drugs.

When the evacuations begin, with boats commandeered by an older couple looking for a family member, and helicopters fly in, the triage that took place was the opposite of most; instead of the sickest going first, the healthiest patients were evacuated first. That decision had repercussions that had to be answered for later.

The first half of the book will have you on the edge of your seat, and the people who stayed behind to help the patients were heroic in their efforts. Fink sketches them with deserved empathy and compassion. As you read, you may ask yourself, "could I have done that?"

The second half of the book deals with the efforts by investigators and the state attorney general, who was looking to make a name for himself, to bring murder charges against the three women. Most of the general public did not feel this was warranted, and support for the women was strong.

But there were people, including doctors from Memorial, who were appalled at what happened and wanted to see justice for the people who died. They felt that these women violated their oath to do no harm and took matters into their own hands.

The one overriding theme of Five Days at Memorial is that governments and healthcare facilities must have effective disaster planning. There were so many failures on the part of government and corporations that allowed this to happen when it did not have to happen.

You may think you know how you feel about this situation, but Fink skillfully shows you all sides, and you will most likely come away from this book with more questions than answers as I did. This is a must-read book.

Great writing

I liked this book so much I pursued the author until she let me narrate it.
I haven't read any Musketeers tales beyond the original but a friend highly recommended Steffan's writing and now I do as well. The characters are all so very clear and compelling and it is their personalities that drive the story. I usually cringe at sexy stuff but Steffan dives in there and you feel like you’re a part of things rather than a creepy lookie-loo (which is incredibly strange considering the set up of the sex scene in this book!)
As a sword fighter myself, I love well-written fights and Steffan delivers here as well. I have already begun reading her other series; The Horse Mistress.

A quick and entertaining read for Musketeers fans!

I suspect I'm not the only person who became addicted to the Musketeers because of the recent BBC series, nor the only one who experienced withdrawal when the most recent and too-short season ended. For fans who are biding their time till season three starts, this series is an excellent remedy for those withdrawal symptoms.

This first book is very short (about 50 pages on my e-reader, not including the preview chapter for book two) and reads almost like a teaser for the rest of the series. That said, as a teaser and introduction it works very well. The characters are introduced in a way that makes them familiar to existing Musketeers fans, yet they're just different enough that this author has clearly made them her own. The circumstances in which they find themselves are also different from other interpretations that I'm familiar with, yet are realistic for the time period. Historical terms are used throughout, helping to lend authenticity. For those unfamiliar with the terms, there's a glossary at the end. The plot moves along quickly, told entirely from d'Artagnan's point of view, and by the end of the story the reader will want to know what happens to these characters next.

Luckily for those new to this series, book two (No Haven Beckons) is already out as of the posting date on this review, and book three seems to be on its way very soon. I suggest starting We Feared to Fly now, and you, lucky reader, will be able to read the first three books of The Queen's Musketeers series with hardly a wait between installments. Happy reading!

A Compelling Musketeer Adventure

I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first installment of this series by R.A. Steffan. It was a very quick read. It can definitely be recommended to those who like the original novels by Alexandre Dumas. Without spoiling a good read to others, the plot is original and very credible in its twists and turns that deviate from the original. The author keeps the readers on their toes with unexpected, yet somewhat familiar, scenes. Geared towards a more mature readership, I would say setting, mood and tone are somewhat dark and serious, without taking the fun out of it. The characters are cleverly introduced and developed. At the end of the first part, readers will want to know more about the adventure(s) the Inseparables have embarked, true to their motto:" All for one, and one for all."
