This book is a must read for everyone. I believe that the "emotional available" human is rare. In our society we are not taught to be emotionally available. This book helps to understand what being emotionally available looks like, how to handle people who are "emotionally unavailable" and those people who are toxic. I couldn't put this book down because it was so relevant to my life. I had a habit of choosing emotionally unavailable/toxic partners but because of this book I will not be making the same choices.

Insightful Yet Compassionate...

Finally, a book that tells it like it is. The information in this book is presented in a straight-up and direct manner, with vivid examples from real life situations that many of us can relate to instantly. At the same time, the author is respectful of the reader and congnizant of the fact that if you have purchased the book then you probably have a few painful stories of your own to overcome. This isn't just a book about identifying the emotional unavailability of others, but also takes a look at your own potential bent toward this condition and provides some useful tools for increasing your ability to open up to others. When helping us understand the main reasons behind emotional unavailability, the author reminds us that an explanation of the issue is not the same thing as an excuse for the behavior. If your life is negatively impacted by emotional unavailability, this book is well worth the time and effort it takes to read and absorb the information it contains.

OK for starters.

A good beginner's book for those interested in building their own speakers without getting into heavy mathematics, passive electronics, complex woodworking, or folded horns. The book explains some the rudiments of speaker theory, and barely enough to design your own simple crossover network. The book has several economical projects which the author already debugged and are ready to build, including: the make and model of the speakers, list of passive components, schematic - which usually include extras like a Zobel network, and the cabinet dimensions. Their are several two-way projects and one three-way with a ten-inch woofer. Most designs use a soft-dome tweeter, if that's what you like. There is a list of raw component vendors in the back of the book. The designs for the ported boxes use the Thiel method, and I am finding that this may be conservatively sized toward the large side with respect to a flat bass response. The prose is a bit wordy, but still easy to read. Overall, I have learned a few things from this book.

Thorough introduction - worthless projects

Great introduction to loudspeaker design theory. Very good, in-depth discussion of crossovers with usable equations.
However, the projects and suggested projects aren't worth the paper they're written on. After studying the theories on cabinet and crossover design, and researching available drivers, I don't think many people are going to be interested in using the cheapest crap available for drivers. The projects all use Audax, Peerless, Seas, and Vifa drivers - the worst junk available. The authors themselves state that these drivers deteriorate quickly, and that all the drivers for one particular project can be purchased for seven dollars each! Are you interested in investing all the time required to learn, design and build a set of speakers and then invest $28 in four drivers? I'm certainly not.
The included software Crossover Modeling Program certainly has potential, and are useful for building the low-buck projects in this book. It includes treatment for virtually all the variables available for manipulation by the designer/builder. However, it's DOS based, almost impossible to navigate, only has data files available for the trash drivers used in the project, and, in fact, doesn't even have all the data files for all of those drivers. If they've got data files for good drivers like Focal, Eton, or even Dynaudio available on a web site or something, the program would be VERY USEFULL. And it is still usefull for modeling the crossover, but without linking in the driver specs, it's guesswork as to how the response curves are going to come out, let alone the actual speaker performance.
It's amazing to me that the authors give such a good treatment to everything, go to all the trouble of developing a good modeling program, and then build garbage. You're going to have more invested in this book than you will in the speaker projects themselves. They even go into buying and/or building fairly sophisticated test equipment - for what? To test your $15 driver? After discussing all the advanced considerations, the projects use surface-mounted drivers with defractions rings instead of routing out the cabintes to flush-mount the drivers. Are you going to put the hundreds of hours into a project and then forego the extra few minutes to properly rout out the driver openings? I'm not!!
Another serious shortcoming is that all the test data only goes down to 200 hertz, and almost all the response curves show a 3+ decibel rise in the 200-500 hz range. Well hey, bass response is where the going gets tough! But it makes the low-dollar, two- way, 5-6" 'woofer' projects look acceptable. The three-way projects are also a joke since the 'woofers' are still only 6.5". Believe me, there is going to be NO appreciable bass response at any significant volume level with ANY of these projects, and who wants to be crossing over to a subwoofer at 200 hz. I like 60-80 hz much better. And I'm not interested in having a system where a 5-6" driver is resonsible for handling everything from 3000 Hz on down - approximately seven octaves!
I DO RECOMMEND buying this book - and then tearing out everything after page 165 .

Disappointing after initial promise

If you are only interested in "spoonfed" recipe loudspeaker designs, this book will be great for you. It does cover some important theory initially and has some very clear and succinct illustrations, but I felt that it was a let down of my expectations, especially if you pay too much attention to things like the cover illustration (way too "hi-end" and complex for this book!).
Speaker building can easily become an addictive and engaging hobbie, and if you think at all that you may want more than a "casual glance" I'd strongly recommend "LOUDSPEAKER DESIGN COOKBOOK" by Vance Dickason instead. It may seem to be a more technical book but it has "staying power" and is a longer term reference text that the Weems/Koonce book.
On the positive side, if you do lack the time, inclination or confidence to get into the "nitty gritty", this book does have projects that feature relatively simple enclosure construction, require readily available (and not too expensive) speaker drivers and components and it has choice in terms of scale, complexity (to an extent) etc in the projects.

This was a fascinating read. I have always loved medical history.I have no idea where the other reviewers here are coming from-- somewhere completely devoid of any sense of history, I guess.

A look at the history of birth control.

This book is an interesting view of what women were advised to do to prevent pregnancy in the early 1900s.
Some of the advice is laughable given the advances that have been made in the field of birth control. One piece of advice given by the author is how to wash and reuse a condom! Other advice includes withdrawing the penis before "seed can be planted in the womb" and various types of douches that can "disable the sperm."
I often heard about these methods of birth control when I was younger ( I'm 62) and I never knew where these pieces of folklore came from. Now I do.

Margaret Sanger, "Family Limitation" (1914). (The Library of Congress is celebrating "Books that Shaped America" with a list of 88 titles and an exhibit in Washington.) "While working as a nurse in the New York slums, Margaret Sanger witnessed the plight of poor women suffering from frequent pregnancies and self-induced abortion. Believing that these women had the right to control their reproductive health, Sanger published this pamphlet that simply explained how to prevent pregnancy. Distribution through the mails was blocked by enforcement of the Comstock Law, which banned mailing of materials judged to be obscene. However, several hundred thousand copies were distributed through the first family-planning and birth control clinic Sanger established in Brooklyn in 1916 and by networks of active women at rallies and political meetings."

Readable Text for Undergrads and Practitioners

This is a very readable textbook for international management courses, especially at the undergraduate level. The cross-cultural writing team ensures that it can be used in any country, i.e. it's not U.S.-centric. The main focus is on application rather than theory, with an emphasis on learning on-the-fly for a given situation.

Only two criticisms: (1) The latter aspect makes it wishy-washy in parts, raising the issues without presenting concrete suggestions for working in or with specific cultural clusters. You might want to supplement the text with resources on national cultures, e.g., "Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands" or executiveplanet.com (2) No test bank for instructors. There are, however, PowerPoints and a dozen supplemental cases as well as many mini-cases ("Applications") in the text itself.

Management Across Cultures; This was a great book, The economic environment global managers face today is challenging, complex and in constant change. This can be shown several ways. First, the sheer power and size of the global economy are almost inconceivable. The United States alone has a population over 300 million people and a GDP that tops $10 trillion, yet those numbers pale in comparison to the same statistics on a worldwide scale. Indeed, no single country dominates the global economy; however, a small association of countries comes close. In a majority of industries, the primary competitors come from across the globe, and each competitor has individual strengths. For instance, the automobile industry today includes major competitors from the United States, Sweden, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Germany and France. Soon, other major companies from countries such as China and India will enter this saturated global market. The situation is similar in many critical industries, including IT, home electronics, defense technologies, software development, medical equipment and telecommunications. In each sector, the questions remain the same. Which company will succeed and which will fail? What determines success? These companies face an increasing quantity of highly-skilled worldwide competitors, but many of these companies approach business in highly individualized ways. These differences can be seen in business regulations, trade policies, national laws, labor policies and other areas, such as how businesses approach both competitors and partners. Some countries have clear cut labor laws that are universally applied and rigorously enforced. Others have labor laws that are intermittently applied and weakly enforced. Understanding the difference is important. Some businesses are based on long-standing personal friendships, instead of utilizing best practices preferred by academia. In some instances, benchmarking means comparing products using traditional methods rather than contrasting products against top-flight competition. In some instances, business partners may have competing ideas about what constitutes a reasonable sales commission. The challenge thus becomes understanding these differences— to unequivocally understand the regional business landscape— and then formulate suitable responses consistent with the company’s business practices, strategies and ethical standards. Moreover, although international trade has risen over 600 percent in the past three decades, some countries have seen greater benefits than others. Only seven countries represent approximately 60 percent of global exports: the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Germany, Canada and Japan. In other words, these countries fare far better in the export market than others, and their success has a direct impact on national prosperity and economic development. Exports stimulate the markets in producer nations and uphold their services and manufacturing base. Concurrently, failing to cultivate an export market to foreign countries can produce economic stagnation, closed factories and unemployment. For this reason, the WTO and other organizations work to eliminate tariff barriers to encourage open trade across the globe. This has helped level the playing field for emerging markets.

About the Author

About the Editors

Hiroshi Nakamura is a professor in the Department of Information Physics and Computing at The University of Tokyo. He is also the director of the Information Technology Center at The University of Tokyo. He received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from The University of Tokyo in 1990.

His research interests are ultra-low-power VLSI design, power-aware computing systems, and high-performance parallel computer systems. He has been an executive committee member of the IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Low-Power Electronics and Design (ISLPED) since 2012 and a steering committee member of the IEEE Non-Volatile Memory Systems and Applications Symposium (NVMSA) since 2014. He is leading the Normally-Off Computing project supported by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) and METI (Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry) of Japan. He is a senior member of IEEE and ACM.

Takashi Nakada is an assistant professor in the Department of Information Physics and Computing at The University of Tokyo. He received the Ph.D. degree in electronic and information engineering from Toyohashi University of Technology in 2007. His research interests include power-aware computing systems, processor architecture, and related simulation technologies.

He has been a program committee member of the IEEE International Conference on Computer Design (ICCD) since 2015 and was a registration chair of the 10th IEEE/ACM International Symposium on Networks-on-Chip (NOCS2016).� He is a member of IEEE and ACM.
