About the Author
Terry Dielman is professor of Decision Sciences at Texas Christian University. Terry received his Ph.D. at the University of Michigan (Business Statistics), his M.S. at the University of Cincinnati (Mathematics) and his B.A. at Emporia State University (Mathematics). His recent research focuses on Regression Analysis, Time Series Forecasting, Robust Statistical Procedures and the Analysis of Pooled Cross-Sectional and Time Series Data. His recent publications include �Bootstrap versus Traditional Hypothesis Testing Procedures for Coefficients in Least Absolute Value Regression� in the JOURNAL OF STATISTICAL COMPUTATION AND SIMULATION. He participates in the Editorial Board of the Journal of Business and Management, and consults for Forecasting Seminars and for various law firms.

Excellent

For my class, the professor assigned Kleinbaum et al's textbook rather than this one. As I mentioned in my review for that book, it was so confusing and poorly organized. Luckily, I found this book in the library and used it instead and ended up a lot less confused in class than my classmates who were trying to understand the Kleinbaum book. Dielman's book is very well organized and laid out. It doesn't have colorful bells and whistles since it's a fairly upper level book, but it does have a very user-friendly layout. Furthermore, the formulas are never presented without an accompanying explanation in plain English and examples of how and when to use them. Another thing I really like about this book is that it gives thorough directions on how to do a lot of the analyses on some common statistical packages. Many of the instructions are accompanied by screenshots. They're at the end of each chapter rather than interspersed in the text, which makes them easy to find. This is actually becoming a great SAS manual for me.

For anyone struggling with the Kleinbaum book, or for any instructor considering using the Kleinbaum book, I would highly recommend this one instead.

excellent book: This is a successful attempt to make the complicated statistics much easier to grasp and use. includes output from various softwares like MINITAB, EXCEL, SAS...

only cautions are:
1. Doesn't go into Mathematically details involved.
2. One should consider that the title reads "a second course...".

You have to be kidding

Let me save you some time and money...according to the author the big secret to keep a man satisfied is that men like sex and lots of it. That's it. DUH! Nothing original here. It is mostly just the author plugging her other books, gossiping about people, (most of which she has never met) and repeating over and over that men like sex and you should give it to them. What a bore!

Author and activist Englard s debut novel (after the nonfiction Settling for More: From Jersey to Judea) is a heart-wrenching and suspenseful tale of love set against the backdrop of an Israel embroiled in conflict. Dara Harow grew up in the U.S., but her grandfather s stories of his time in Israel impel her to visit. In the summer of 1983, Dara travels to volunteer on a kibbutz at the base of the Gilboa Mountains, though her parents insist she return home in time for her freshman year at Columbia University. In addition, her father is a rocket physicist with the U.S. Department of Defense, and is concerned about what message his daughter s time in Israel will send to the U.S. government. While on the kibbutz, Dara falls in love with Roni, a young Israeli officer in an elite counter-terrorism unit, and they soon make plans to marry against her parents wishes. Dara s life, however, is hurled into turmoil when a terror cell targets her father in an attempt to procure information regarding the U.S. s advanced rocket technology. About the Author
A native of New York, Zahava Englard lived in Teaneck, NJ, before moving with her family to Israel in 2006. An outspoken activist in the United States on behalf of Israel, she served as trustee on the executive board of One Israel Fund and as its executive director. Presently Zahava lives in Efrat, Gush Etzion. Her writing includes Settling for More: From Jersey to Judea, and she lectures in the United States and Israel about her books, Jewish activism, and her passion for Israel s well-being. This is her first novel.

Hooked, but...

Let me start by saying that I too read The Gilboa Iris in one sitting. Expecting to read for a half-hour or so before bed, I stayed awake through to the last page. So I liked it. Definitely. As an unusual blend of fairy tale and tragedy, it succeeds. I cried...and was also pleased to laugh out loud. Englard has some excellent funny lines that read true to one familiar with both American and Israeli society, and the intersection of the two. Moreover, the complexities in the society she depicts - even to the interplay between religion and secularism - are nuanced, at least to this informed reader. And the characters left me wistful for the depth of feeling in their commitments and relationships.

Unfortunately, the text has a long way to go. The editing leaves more than a little to be desired, with typos and elementary grammatical errors glaring. More substantively, the words of The Gilboa Iris are often repetitive, flourish with melodrama, and are self-conscious enough to hold this reader at arm's length. Instead of being fully consumed by the story and the personalities and the issues, I found myself noticing the words...rephrasing as I read, which detracted somewhat from the novel as a whole. And structurally, I was able to predict the end of the story early on, as well as some of the most significant points of action along the way.

Still, I will say that even fairly certain as to how the plot would unfold, I was hooked into the story. I enjoyed the twists and turns in Englard's plot - some moving and disturbing. She brought difficult characters to life and she conveyed some of the rough purity (if I may be so bold) of contemporary life in Israel. I hope she keeps writing (perhaps with more rigorous editing to take her work to the next level), because I will be glad to read more from her.

An Outstanding Read!

The Gilboa Iris is a story of love,loss,faith,hope,and perseverance. Written from the heart and perspective of one whose very being is entrenched in national pride, Zahava Englard brilliantly draws us into the lives of her vibrant,colorful characters using mystery, excitement, drama, and humor. We are captivated by beautiful, descriptive language and flowing dialogue. Every adventure will leave you breathless as you follow the protagonists around the globe completely unprepared for the unknown. More than a touch of chilling reality evokes sentiments of compassion, anger, and frustration and yet these feelings are embraced by the reader throughout the entire, spectacular plot.
This electrifying novel is not to be missed! I can't wait for the sequel!

Could Not Put it Down

Not very often do I find a book that so captures my attention that I almost literally cannot put it down. I had many other things I should have been doing on a Friday night, but I was unable to do them. I absolutely had to finish this book! In fact, I got to a really exciting point last night, and I did not want to go to sleep!

When I began reading this book, I knew absolutely nothing about it. It seemed fine to begin with. Roni and Dara are star-crossed lovers, love at fist sight--the usual stuff. I have to admit that I wasn't even that interested during the first 30 pages of reading or so. But I was quite smitten with Roni. Give me a rough, strong guy who knows what he wants and doesn't beat around the bush--yes, that is Roni. They made such a sweet couple.

What I did not see coming was the international intrigue and espionage. In fact, there was much I did not see coming. The story seemed normal until Dara returned to the U.S. And the twists and turns did not stop. The more I read, the more I was on edge. I kept telling my mom that I had to finish the book so I would know if I was right or not!

All I will say is that I mostly figured out the direction the story was going. But the author still kept me on the edge of my seat. The book was one wild ride with sweet (not sappy) romance along the way! I connected with this book on so many levels, and it has quickly become my current favorite read.

Okay, it had some minor profanity throughout, but I will tell you, that none of it truly offended me because of how it was used. And although there were implied bedroom scenes, they were not described in any kind of detail. In fact, a part of me truly enjoyed the physical relationship between Roni and Dara. His indomitable sense of humor always showed through.

I do not believe I have read a book that takes place in Israel since I was college age. The author is incredibly knowledgeable about her people. I even managed to learn something that I did not remember ever reading in the Bible concerning Mt. Gilboa. I will let you discover the meaning behind the title of this book--which is quite clever, by the way.

I would recommend this book to lovers of history, fiction, romances, thrillers, and Jewish literature. You will not be sorry that you picked up this book. I would say more about this book, but I don't want to give it away. This is a fabulous debut novel, and I understand now why the book has been rated so highly.

Gabriela Alicia Martorell was born in Seattle, Washington, but moved as a toddler to Guatemala. At eight, she returned to the United States and lived in Northern California until leaving for her undergraduate training at the University of California, Davis. After obtaining her B.S. in Psychology, she earned her Ph.D. in Developmental and Evolutionary Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Since that time, she has taught at a number of learning institutions including Portland State University, Norfolk State University, and her current full-time position as an Associate Professor of Psychology at Virginia Wesleyan College. Gabriela has taught courses in introductory psychology, research methods, lifespan human development, infant development, child development, adolescent development, adulthood and aging, cultural issues in psychology, evolutionary psychology, developmental psychopathology, and Capstone community-based learning courses in Early Childhood Education and Aging. She is committed to teaching, mentoring, and advising. She is currently conducting research on attachment processes in immigrant Latino/a adolescents which is funded by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, and is Co-Investigator for a National Science Foundation grant focused on student retention and success in science, technology, engineering, and math.

Wow!

This was way more complete and detailed than I expected! Don't get me wrong, this is what I was looking for and oh, so much more. It's just that I'm a bit of a pessimist when it comes to ordering things through the Internet in general. But this was a very good find; it was extremely detailed in all the music, it includes sheet music from prologue to finale. The music notes are printed rather small, so one might decide to blow it up or copy it onto their own staff sheets.

But this was truly a remarkable find!

Just what I was looking for

As a very good pianist (not a superstar), I'm not interested in playing 275 pages of music. I was really only looking for the original writing of the world-recognized "swan theme". It took me a while to find it... To save others some time, it starts at Page 142.

I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I do.

Reprint of the original piano reduction of the complete ballet

This "Swan Lake" is a reprint of the excellent piano reduction of Tchaikovsky's complete score for the ballet as he originally composed it, from 1875-1876. It includes all the melodies and countermelodies (a few woodwind cues and countermelodies are occasionally notated above the staff,) and what is now known as the "Black Swan" pas de deux is found in its originally intended place, in Act I. Even though practically every note of the score winds up on the page, the advanced pianist will still be able to find ways to make some portions of the reduction sound more orchestral. There are very few orchestration indications; also not included are all the revisions by Riccardo Drigo and Tchaikovsky's brother Modest for the revival that set the standard for the piece. Those can be found in a different volume, also available through Amazon.

But among some of the interesting things that are included are all of the titles of the various numbers, as well as some plot points and stage directions, in Russian cyrillic with a French translation appearing in footnotes. There is also an appendix that includes the alternate pas de deux for Anna Sobeshchanskaya (music known to most people as Balanchine's Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux), and the wonderful alternate Russian Dance meant to be inserted as the second variation in the Act III Pas de Six. (The other variations in the Pas de Six are not given any nationality.)

As this is a reprint from plates that date from the mid-1870's, it takes some getting used to reading, and the French footnotes are decipherable but sometimes a bit blurred.
But for following along with some of the more recent recordings, and for stealing some variations for ballet class, this Kalmus edition is welcome and recommended.
