Great book for 5 week summer course

I took this class at an undergraduate level in a five week summer course online. For an online self-guided learning experience, this was an excellent textbook. It was easy and interesting to read. It had a lot of good information and good life applications and practical examples to help solidify the concepts. The book was very well organized and it was easy to find the information that you were looking for. I also bought the study guide with it which was a great help to review for tests.

I personally can't stand textbook prices and I always try and investigate if the "old" version will work for my class. This book is all but identical. Some of the chapters are re-worded but that is all. I would buy this over the "new" version aka a different picture on the front of the book.

I love it so much I'm buying it...again!

I have given this book away to different school's where I have taught in Minnesota, and in Mexico (Chiapas, San Luis Potosi). Now I find myself teaching again, and I need it! I'm ordering another copy from Amazon.com!
This book gives ESL/EFL students the repetition they need, and it makes it so simple, that they don't mind the work! It is page after page of photocopiable worksheets that start from zero--the verb "to be" and goes on to advanced.
You can use it for extra practice specific area for a student who needs it, or for everyday class worksheets, quizzes, homework, or games (I put one item up at a time, and see who comes up with the correct answer first)...
After I know my students understand a concept I make sure they can put it into practice in many different ways. This book is the easiest way I've found to do that. English Structure Practices has all the bases covered...including exceptions to rules that I may not have remembered.
It's VERY THOROUGH! And that's how my students want to learn and I want to teach; thoroughly!

Finally -- a clear explanation of tensors

I was first exposed to tensors in college, and the experience was so unpleasant and bewildering that I switched to quantum mechanics. QM made sense to me; tensors did not.

Decades later, I had a real need for tensors in my job, so I had to learn them. I bought and read a half-dozen well-rated books from Amazon, but only this book worked. The exposition is mathematically rigorous, but the content is also well-motivated. Their explanation of "The Tensor Concept" is the subject of a dedicated chapter; it alone is worth the price of the book. Its presentation encapsulates the book's style, so I'll preview it here.

A standard, one-dimensional vector is a ray in space, with direction and length independent of the coordinate system. As the coordinate system changes (e.g. rotate and/or stretch the axes), the coordinate values change, but the vector is the same. (Indeed, that's how you figure out the new coordinate values!)

The most simple example of mapping one vector into another is multiplication by a two dimensional matrix. Here is the golden insight: if the input and output vectors are coordinate independent, then there must be some kind of coordinate-independent function that defines the mapping, and it is called a tensor. In short, a mixed rank-2 tensor is the coordinate independent version of a matrix.

They work through the transformation rules of a standard vector to establish notation, then work through the exact corresponding process to get the transformation rules for the matrix. Instead of just asserting that "A Tensor is something which transforms the following way", they start with the intuitive notion and present a simple derivation of the transformation rule. For example, they state up front that the reason why the tensor transforms is that there is a change in basis vectors. Some descriptions never mention what is causing the tensor to 'transform' -- they just assume you already know. An excellent precept of math education is "Never memorize, always re-derive" (because memorizing what you don't understand may get you through the next test, but it deprives one of the foundation necessary to get through the test after next). The presentation in this book follows that precept beautifully (e.g. starting at transformation of bases and deriving the transformation laws). The Soviets were famous for their mathematical education, and this book reflects the excellence of that educational approach.

Similarly, the dot product of two vectors defines a scalar. If the scalar is coordinate independent, then there must be a coordinate independent function from vectors to numbers. It is a different kind of rank-1 tensor. When they do the same basic derivation, the distinction between covariant and contravariant indicies becomes crystal clear. If the components of the vector are a "contravariant" tensor, then this "different kind" is a "covariant" tensor. They also explain the relationship between reciprocal basis systems, and illustrate in clear pictures why whatever is "covariant" in one system is "contravariant" in the other, and vice versa. So they finally made clear what was so confusing about "covariant" and "contravariant": there is no fundamental distinction, and it just depends on which arbitrary choice of coordinate system one makes.

That's the first 100 pages. The next 150 present the "applications" portion. Once the basic concept is clear, the rest is fairly straightforward algebra. Again, it is quite well presented, but the main value to me was the conceptual foundation.

A clear development of vector and tensor concepts.

I have a solid foundation in vector analysis, but never felt comfortable with tensors and generalized coordinates, yet these are necessary for much of modern physics. This book was an ideal fit for my background. It presented a clear and steady development of both tensor and vector concepts with illustrations and examples. Covariant and contravariant components, metrics, and generalized coordinates were developed alongside of orthogonal basis concepts. Then, after the first half of the book developed the tools, the second half of the book presented analysis covering such topics as Stokes and Gauss' theorem, finishing with the fundamental theorem of vector analysis. My only complaint is that the book ended where it did. A section on more advanced tensor concepts would have fit in nicely.

Dated, but well-written and complete

This book is a translation from the Russian of a regarded text written in the 1960's. Taking this into account you cannot expect to find a state-of-the-art exposition of the subject. However, the book is written in a very concise and focused style, making it endurable. Its clear introduction to many delicate topics (covariant derivatives, metric tensors, geodesics, etc.) is still valuable even now when the differential form approach seems to have won the battle. Also, the sections it devotes to integral theorems look more in touch with current trends in mathematics than most of the classical texts at this level.

Hi! I have not purchased this book but I figured that given the other review on here, I should clarify that the Nutshell series are meant for law students (probably practitioners too). The prior reviewer obviously didn't realize this.

M&A Nutshell

All hail this nutshell. I may be giving this nutshell more credit than its worth, because it saved me on my M&A final. This nutshell gave me everything I needed to know for my take home M&A final. I had 48 hours to basically teach myself M&A and finish the final. I did finish the final and came out with a good grade in the class all thanks to this handy little nutshell, which taught me everything I needed to know. This nutshell is literally just a really condensed version of the textbook by Oesterle, but its good because the nutshell leaves in all the necessary stuff while removing all the fluff from the textbook.

There are some typos in this electronic version which in some case cast doubt on the accuracy of the text. Otherwise, my experience of reading this book is quite satisfactory.

Amazing. I feel like the author was putting my exact thoughts and feelings on paper, but with research and statistics to validate me! Gives a thorough (and humorous) explanation of the problem, but also some really creative and liberating suggestions of how to fix it. I'm pretty sure anyone with kids and a husband could relate to and benefit from this book. I've been recommending it to everyone I know!

Simply amazing

This is an amazing text. Nye methodically and somewhat rigorously presents the arguments behind why certain property tensors take on specific characters for different crystalline materials. Nye is uncannily lucid in his explanations- don't worry if you have trouble with tensors. Nye has an amazing introduction in this book (I think because he ties things to geometric interpretations rather than algebraic). Similarly, if you aren't familiar with the physics related to the property, or it has been a while, Nye briefly reviews what is relevant and where in the governing equations the properties fit. I would recommend as a prerequisite an Introduction to Crystallography, especially if you are a little rusty on your crystal systems. Nye does give a brief summary, but I found it a little lacking.

As far as the main subject of the book, for example, thermal conductivity is actually a second-rank tensor, but for the materials most often encountered (by engineers, anyway), it reduces to a scalar times the identity tensor. This, as well as other properties, reflect the underlying symmetry of the crystalline lattice, and Nye takes us through why certain components of the tensor are zero. This generalizes for higher-rank tensors such as elastic stiffness/compliance, or piezo-x effects, and all are discussed. It is more than just the symmetry of the lattice, however; there are thermodynamic arguments to be made as well, and Nye hits the high points of these as well. He also gives values for the different constants at room temperature for different materials, and in some cases discusses issue with the measurement of the constants (but really, there are better books for this, like Elastic Constants and Their Measurements).

If you are a materials scientist or an engineer/mechanician doing work with solids, this book definitely belongs dog-eared on your bookshelf. I can't recommend this enough.

better know the space groups

This book is good for people who has some idea about space groups and point groups in crystallography. Knowledge of those is not necessary but makes it much easier for people who does have that knowledge. Being from mechanical background I have not studied symmetry groups yet. Also, determining properties of second rank tensors by comparing them to quadrics was a little confusing for me since my math background is not that strong. It's an excellent book otherwise for understanding how crystal properties depend on the inherent symmetries present in a crystal and how by reducing the number of independent constants the math can be simplified to a great extent. The book was recommended to me to study wave propagation in anisotropic media. Hearmon's book An Introduction to Applied Anisotropic Elasticity. was more suited towards that once you know the number of independent elastic constants for a particular crystal lattice. If you are interested in knowing how to determine the independent constants, Love's book A Treatise on the Mathematical Theory of Elasticity (Dover Books on Engineering) has a good account of that.

A wonderful read for lovers of Indian culture

Madness of the Saints will not disappoint lovers of Indian culture and religion. The book is full of fascinating stories and lore about the mad saints and their devoted followers. For centuries Indians have believed that certain people can take on god-like qualities including some very eccentric ones. A saintly person might take on the character of the mischievous boy Krishna, and his followers will indulge his antics and needs with the steady love of a true bhakta. Some saintly types in India are considered exempt from the restrictions of ordinary morality such as the tantrikas who seek moksha (liberation) through sexual yoga or certain saddhus (renunciates) who seek enlightenment and liberation through extreme practices like hanging weights from their genitals, standing on one leg, or holding one arm aloft all the time. To a person conditioned by western ways the mad saints may seem baffling until he or she reads Ms McDaniel's excellent explanations of how the odd behaviors of the saints are justified by traditional Indian ideology. She elucidates with great clarity the key place of ecstatic experience in the search for self-liberation. Ms McDaniel's deep love of India comes through on every page. A great book.

An Ecstatic Read

A great book about the Bhakta traditions of West Bengal. Having lived in India and traveled to West Bengal, I can state that Mrs. McDaniel not only captures the facts, but also the deeper sense of it. She hits at the heart of things in way that to one informed stick out. It is not only what is written, but the way in which it is written that makes me know for certainty that the author knows her stuff. Also provided in the book are rare quotes from tantric literature, as well as stories of little know saints, like vama khepa(the mad saint of the cremation grouds). What makes the book so impressive is that while it comes from an obviously informed prospective, she does not fall into the annoying trap of evangenlist. Moreover, she does not interject herself into the text at all, which seems to be the self important trend of many professors. A great book. I'm surprised it isn't more popular....

Tambi�n se profundiza en los modelos uniecuacionales y multiecuacionales no lineales y los modelos ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, MANCOVA, GLM y Modelos Mixtos. Todo el desarrollo de ejercicios pr�cticos se realiza utiliz�ndo el software STATA, uno de los m�s actual del mercado adecuado para estas tareas econom�tricas no triviales.
