Gr 2 Up—This picture book biography of artist Louise Bourgeois (1911–2010), who was best known for her installation art and sculpture, highlights the roots of her inspiration. Through text and images, the author and illustrator emphasize the aspects of Bourgeois's childhood that influenced her: the river that flowed past her house, the colors of the flowers and plants in the garden, the "web of stars above her," and her nurturing mother, who taught her how to weave and repair tapestries. Novesky makes excellent use of simile ("Her family lived in a big house on the water that wove like a wool thread through everything.") and alliteration ("She taught her about the warp and the weft and how to weave."). Bourgeois's mother is also compared to a spider—"a repairer of broken things." As the story progresses, the images of flowers and plants, the cloth, and the water become larger, sometimes taking up most of the page. The perspective also changes, as readers see what Bourgeois saw as a young girl—the beauty of nature, her mother at work, and the tools her mother used—and, finally, her creations: giant spiders and webs, spirals and circular webs, and cloth drawings and books. This is a children's book, so some of the more unpleasant episodes in Louise Bourgeoise's life are not mentioned. Pictures are nice. I learned about textile work she did in the last part of her life.

I purchased the soft copy of this before it was put in print as a giveaway at my husband's birthday party. From what I can tell through browsing it, the quotes are well-chosen, manly (as promised!), and inspiring. I, of course, am not a man, but I think that men would appreciate the approach that shows faith to be the manly quest that it is, rather than the effeminate, sugar-coated journey that it is so often presented as.

This beautifully designed book is a gem! It's jam-packed with awesome and challenging quotes—many of which I hadn't heard before. I find myself turning to it whenever I spot it and I'm always inspired by what I read. Sometimes the more simple a thing is, the more effective it is. This is a simple and yet powerful book. Very moving

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is the true tale of Nabeel Qureshi's journey from being raised a devout Muslim to his conversion as a follower of Jesus.

I knew I was in trouble when I had only listened a few seconds. The dedication at the beginning of the book, read by the author himself, had me bawling like a baby. It is dedicated to his parents, who are still in the Muslim faith. It is so honoring and beautiful, you can't help but cry.

The entire book is read by Qureshi and it is read very well. His voice is clear and soothing; his accent is soft and mesmerizing. Obviously, the story is very personal to him and his emotions come through in his reading perfectly.

The story itself is also incredible. It was beautiful to soak in his loving childhood. It was very informative as to the beliefs of his family. I was unaware of how much disagreement about doctrine that there is within different Muslim beliefs and Qureshi walks through them carefully and respectfully. I found his descriptions of East vs. West thoughts about guilt/shame societies to be very illuminating. It truly is a completely different perspective and makes an incredible difference for anyone with the opportunity to be a witness to a Muslim.

LOVED this book!!

I have to say that as a Christian, before reading this book, I had very little knowledge of the Muslim faith and how Muslim children are raised. This book gave me a peek into that world in a very personal and moving way, helping me better understand what they really believe and how to reach them. Two key points I found very convicting: as a Muslim, Nabeel was never invited into a Christian home AND, until meeting David Wood, he never encountered a Christian who knew his/her Bible or theology well enough to defend it. As a Muslim, Nabeel prided himself on being able to take on any Christian on any biblical topic and eviscerate their feeble arguments, which is sad to think about, since apologetics gives us so many concrete, historically based reasons to believe . We're not befriending our neighbors and we're not educating ourselves or our children. We're not obeying II Timothy 4:2 by being ready in season and out to share our faith with those who so desperately need to hear the Truth. This book is helpful on so many levels. I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about obeying the Great Commission.

Highly recommend.

I bought this book digitally elsewhere when it was on sale. I expected to gain insight into the Muslim culture and religion. What I didn't expect was to learn half as much about the Bible and converts as I did about the Quran and Islam. Enlightening and a very compelling story of the author's journey and struggles. Highly recommend.

UPDATE:
This comes after reading two more of these kind of stories.

Suffice it to say I've become fascinated with these stories of late, and I believe God lead me to read them because I can't explain why I spontaneously decided to start the first one (of three, so far) when I hadn't read an actual book in years. All three came from a very similar culture, and at the same time, different. One was an academic from a loving family (Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus). The second was a rebellious kid (Ex-Muslim). The third one was an abused little girl (Hiding in the Light). But all three had the strict Islamic culture and religion ingrained in them from birth. It's different from ours in ways most of us don't realize.
Now, I can discuss science and the Bible. I can discuss evolution, creation and everything in between. I've read a few books on those subjects, too. I can discuss the historicity and veracity of the New Testament. (And the academic talks about that point in his story because Muslims are taught that the New Testament is corrupt and inaccurate) However, I've come to believe, that in the end, that still isn't enough for most unbelievers or those of other faiths.
While looking for one of these books in the Mardel book section, the man that was helping me told me of his missionary friend who had worked extensively in the Middle East. His friend had become convinced that if Muslims were to come to Christ, it would be through supernatural encounters, visions, dreams, etc. After reading these books, I'm inclined to agree, but I believe this is the case with many more than just Muslims. All three of these books are filled with examples of this. I was brought to tears more than once in each of their stories. I, myself, have had similar experiences, as have some members of my family. And if you're curious about those, let's have lunch and I'll tell you about them. ( :

A popular book, valuable but flawed introduction to stock screening; consider paying for the current edition.

A couple of reviews I read before purchase claimed that there was not much new material in the fourth edition compared to the third. Those reviews are not correct. There are a several new strategies tested and (somewhat) improved presentation of the data.

When the first edition came out it was a pioneering attempt to quantify various well-known trading strategies through backtesting. That was pretty valuable! Now, of course, everybody backtests their strategies before losing money on them. Still, this book is a good introduction to popular strategies (especially in the "value" realm), and an overview of what sort of things you can learn from backtesting.

It is also fair to point out that O'Shaughnessy is far from consistent in his testing, and his charts and graphs tend to make up in volume what they lack in clarity. In the end, if you are learning the art of stock screening, you likely want this book. But you should plan to learn a lot more than what you get here.

A Scientific Approach to Stock Selection

Investment books taut a number of filtering strategies to find profitable stock investments. This book provides valuable information on what works and what doesn't work. The method is systematic and scientific. The book contains a lots of data, but less analysis. It remains, nonetheless, a valuable work and belongs on the shelf of most serious investors.

The one significant weakness in O'Shaugnessy method is that it does not reflect the impact of a more complete trading system that includes money management and technically-based entry and exit poitns. The investment plan used to compare stock selection strategies is to run a stock filter annually and to rebalance the portfolio into the 10, 25 or 50 stocks in the screen on an equal weight basis. There are no stop loss orders, no position sizing based on volatility, and no trade timing based on whether the security is trending down or in a trading range.

O'Shaughnessy concludes that value-oriented factors (price-to-sales, price-to-book, price-to-cash flow, price-to-earnings, and dividend yield) are much more important to stock performance long term than growth factors (earnings growth rate, return on equity, etc.), except for relative strength. While this may be true using the annual rebalance approach under which O'Shaughnessy tested the stock selection strategies, it may not be true in a more complete investment/trading system that includes technical entry and exit points to ensure that the buyer does not pay too much for a given stock or run to much downside risk, position sizing and stop orders. I would like to see these results re-run in conjunction with a basic objective trading system that includes a money management component (i.e., stop loss, risk-based position sizing, etc.). It may be that value factors are vital to O'Shaughnessy selection strategy because they serve as a proxy for the missing money management and timing components of a complete trading system.

Despite this weakness, the book is a significant contribution to our understanding of which fundamental factors are most important to selecting less risky, more profitable investments for the long term. Recommended.

Statistical conclusions presented with more brevity in other books

I bought this book because it was referred to in Ken Fisher's latest book and wanted to learn more about using statistical analysis to generate better returns in the market. The author does a great job of presenting his analyses and going through his rationale for why he carried them out the way he did. But whereas Fisher stressed doing statistical analysis with emphasis on generating trading tools to use in a forward looking fashion and to see which trading trends are useful under current market conditions, the author's analyses are performed looking back over decades of previous data with mainly a long term buy and hold strategy in mind. Consequently he arrives at simple value investing conclusions (ie, buy low P/E stocks, buy low P/S stocks, buy high E/P stocks, and avoid growth stocks with high P/Es). But again, in many cases he uses fairly long time periods for the analyses and assumes the use of a buy and hold strategy in which you can buy the stocks and then just let them sit in your portfolio whithout any worries for years to come. About the Author
Jo Anne Vasquez, Ph.D. is Vice President and Program Director of Arizona Transition Years' Teacher and Curriculum STEM Initiatives at the Helios Education Foundation. Jo Anne has been a classroom teacher, district science specialist for Mesa Public Schools, adjunct professor of science education at Arizona State University, and director of professional development and outreach for ASU's Center for Research on Education in Science, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (CRESMET). A recognized leader in science education, Jo Anne is a Past President of NSTA (National Science Teachers Association), and the National Science Education Leadership Association. She was a Presidential Appointee to the National Science Board, as well as the first and only K-12 educator elected to the governing board of the National Science Foundation. Her distinguished service and extraordinary contributions to the advancement of science education at the local, state and national levels has won her numerous awards including NSTA's highest award, the 2006 Robert H. Carlton Award for Leadership in Science Education. She has been named Arizona's Outstanding Educator of the Year and the National Environmental Association's Teacher of the Year.

Michael Comer's dedication to teaching was fostered by his early experiences at Assumption School in Peekskill NY. He carried that passion into his own professional career teaching middle school science. His work with classroom educators providing hands-on training and professional development workshops led to an invitation to work with the Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia on improving their science instruction. Michael is coauthor (with Jo Anne) of Developing Visual Literacy in Science K-8 (NSTA Press). Currently he is the National Marketing Manager for STEM at McGraw-Hill and is the proud father to Brett, Toby and Elyse (who also share his passion for learning).

Dr. Cary Sneider is Associate Research Professor at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. He also consults on diverse issues in STEM education, such as youth programs at science centers, educational standards, and assessment. Cary was a contributing writer of A Framework for K-12 Science Education (National Research Council 2012), which laid the groundwork for new science standards, and is currently a member of the writing team that is implementing the Framework under the title Next Generation Science Standards. In 2011 he joined the National Assessment Governing Board, which sets policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as "The Nation's Report Card." Until 2007, Cary served as Vice President for Educator Programs at the Museum of Science in Boston, and prior to that he served as Director of Astronomy and Physics Education at the Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California. He has been a recipient of the Distinguished Informal Science Education award from NSTA and in 2003 was named National Associate of the National Academy of Sciences.

OK, but not that great...

I bought this book when our school became a STEM school. It contains some decent information about STEM, but no practical way to implement STEM lessons in your classroom or how to adapt existing lessons to a STEM focus. Very disappointed in the purchase, did not contain any information that I was really looking for in regards to STEM. Save your money and go to the Internet blogs--they have a lot more practical information about STEM!

This book is invaluable especially if you team it up with the NSTA seminar of the same title, [...]

My favorite part of the book is when the authors list the five guiding principles for effective STEM instruction and sample activities. This book is a resource identifying the characteristics of STEM, it is not a how to book full of STEM activities to use. The authors make you think and analyze your own practice causing you to become STEM practitioners.

Adding to your STEM repertoire

If you already know what the STEM acronym means and you want to add depth to your knowledge and understanding, STEM Lesson Essentials is a good book for you. It is an easy read, which is great for the busy teacher with limited time, so you'll be able to use what you learn quickly. Chapters are short and focused, with vignettes of STEM integration in action and reflection questions that can be used in a Professional Learning Community. I've used this book as part of an online PLC dedicated to Integration of Math and Science in K-8, and participants found the chapter on STEM assessment particularly helpful. This is a well-written, useful resource book for pre-service and classroom teachers.
