A good tool for test prep.

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is the intellectual part of the the Armed Forces Qualifying Test (AFQT). The test is "curved" which means that a raw score is converted to a cumulative distribution where you are ranked against approximately 6000 test takers, so a score of 95 on the test means you scored better than 95% of other test takers. This means that the raw score (percentage of questions answered correctly) does not reflect the curved score. For example, if the test is very easy perhaps 50% of candidates will score 85% on the test. This means that a raw score of 85% on this hypothetical easy test will actually give you a curved score of 50. To get into certain parts of the armed services requires better than a median (50) AFQT performance (Air force, Coast Guard, Marines, SEALS, Special Forces and Special Operations) in the core areas of Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Mathematical Knowledge (MK), Word Knowledge (WK) and Paragraph Comprehension (PC). So candidates seeking entry into those areas will want to be well prepared for the test. Understanding instructions is a survival skill in the military, so verbal expression (VE), which is composed of (PC+WK) and receives double weight in computation of the final AFQT score. "So what?" You might ask. Consider these two hypothetical candidates: Candidate A scores 99 on the AR and MK test, but 0 on both WK and PC, while candidate B score 0 on AR and MK, but 99 on WK and PC. Candidate A will have an AFQT of 33 while candidate B will have an AFQT of 66. This means candidate B will likely be able to enter any service of their choice, while candidate A may not be able to get into any service. Though such a scenario is unlikely, it is demonstrates the importance of addressing weaknesses in the VE tests to getting a higher AFQT and thus giving you more military career options.

This is a very comprehensive test guide that combines DVD video (which are also available online), flash cards and practice tests (in the book and online). The book starts with practice tests for you to get a sense of where your current performance is. The core ( AR,MK, and VE) and AO, contain nothing that someone with a high school education would not know however, the technical sub-tests do require some specific knowledge that is outside a standard school curriculum. Though source material for the tests is not covered doing the questions should help you look-up the information you need to study.

As with all timed tests, speed getting to the correct answer is a factor, so strategies are covered that allow you to eliminate incorrect answers quickly. There is also guidance for your pretest prep and dealing with test stress. The book covers the difference between the computer-adaptive testing (CAT) and the traditional pencil and paper test to help with you tune your test preparation.

This book was very helpful and informative. The timed practice test were a great way to study and maximize my efforts. The book will guide you through how to study and gives explanations when you get wrong answers. I took my test two weeks after getting the book and made a 84 AFQT score.

Insight into Southern History offers complexity of Southern Identity

Cobb offers great insight to southern history post-WWII. He covers everything: politics, economics, culture, religion, arts, ideology, internal conflict, hypocrisy, identity, and evolution. At times, his information is unorganized and scattered. He also offers a lot of data without always creating solid context for it; he expects you to figure it out. Most chapters are enjoyable and informative. A few are tedious and take a little effort to get through. As a southern reviewer, it's a great collection of information on the "modern" South, both its contributions to the betterment of the country, as well as its hindrances.

The South since WWII

The book came today, it was earlier than expected. The book is in very good condition; no underlining or marking inside. While I have yet to read the book the reviews are excellent. A friend and I will have completed a joint reading of the South beginning with Cash's Mind of the South, picking up recent history with Reconstruction to the present day Hats off to the seller.

About the Author
For two decades, Cecie Starr secured her place as one of the bestselling biology textbook authors. Ralph Taggart, former Chair of Biological Sciences at Michigan State University, is now the chair of Geological Sciences. Professor Taggart, known for his outstanding research in Paleobotany, has taught General Biology for over 20 years.

Christine Evers (B.S. in Biology, State University of New York at Stony Brook) has been creating multimedia and web-based materials to supplement Starr and other science texts for ten years. After working as a research assistant studying developmental biology of slime mold, she was awarded an N.S.F. fellowship to attend Yale, where she studied Evolutionary Biology and honeybee behavior. Worst texbook I've ever used

This book may be fine for an 18-19 year old kid who just had high school biology a couple of years ago, but for those of us who haven't had a science class in 10+ years it's borderline useless. Each chapter opens as if it is aimed at a grade school level audience, only to switch gears after four pages and diving into complex descriptions of chemical reactions, yet failing completely to explain or define many important points.
A fine example of this shortcoming can be seen in chapter 6 which deals with photosynthisis. The reader is introduced to NADP+ and NADPH, yet there is no definition of of what either are and it's not very clear as to what exactly they do. A simple web search, however, results in a succinct answer to both what they are and what they do.
I feel that for the price of this book (your first born child, plus an arm and a leg) that it should be more thorough and clear in its explanations.

I really love Sue Heck, because I think she is one of the most honest and lovely characters of all times, and reading this emotionary it's like been in her head a little bit. Congratulations Eden Sher, you have made a beautiful work with your performance and with this book, too!

Funny Book, Great Gift Idea for the Holidays

As a fan of The Middle, I knew Eden Sher was a hilarious actor, but now I know she's a hilarious writer, too. The Emotionary is perfect as a comedic coffee table book or for that person in your life who has all of the feelings and can't quite put them into words. The comics by Julia Werz are a perfect match for Sher's absurdly real feeling descriptions. I've now bought it for my sister and mom and couldn't recommend it more. Five stars.
