The common ring, torus and hypercube topologies of clusters are then explained and global communication procedures on these topologies are studied. This first part closes with the MapReduce (MR) model of computation well-suited to processing big data using the MPI framework.

In the second part, the book focuses on high-performance data analytics. Flat and hierarchical clustering algorithms are introduced for data exploration along with how to program these algorithms on computer clusters, followed by machine learning classification, and an introduction to graph analytics. This part closes with a concise introduction to data core-sets that let big data problems be amenable to tiny data problems.

Exercises are included at the end of each chapter in order for students to practice the concepts learned, and a final section contains an overall exam which allows them to evaluate how well they have assimilated the material covered in the book.

About the Author
Frank Nielsen is a Professor at École Polytechnique in France where he teaches graduate (vision/graphics) and undergraduate (Java/algorithms),and a senior researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories Inc. His research includes Computational information geometry for imaging and learning and he is the author of 3 textbooks and 3 edited books. He is also on the Editorial Board for the Springer Journal of Mathematical Imaging and Vision.

Currently, Dr. Roblyer is Adjunct Professor of Instructional Technology and Distance Education (ITDE) at Nova Southeastern University, chairing dissertations for ITDE doctoral students. She serves on editorial boards of various technology and research journals, is past-president of two AERA Special Interest Groups, and current officer in AERA’s Online Teaching and Learning SIG. Pearson is a Greedy Moneygrubbing Publishing Company!

I was required to buy this for a class. The $100 loose leaf version offered no access to the online "check your understanding quizzes" or any other videos or links that were in the book. I contacted Pearson and they said that the loose leaf version, even though it was very expensive, did not include those features. Boo Pearson! Way to fulfill the stereotype of the greedy publishing company!

About the Author
Marlyn Shelton is Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Science at the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California, Davis, USA. He is a member of the American Water Resources Association, the Association of American Geographers, and the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. He has been elected as a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellow and a Fellow of the Ohio Academy of Science. He has authored and co-authored four previous books, published numerous scientific papers, and served as an associate editor for the Journal of the American Water Resources Association from 1991-9. He has given interviews to newspapers and television stations on topics such as climate change, El Ni�o, floods, drought, and air quality, and has presented lectures and workshops for the US Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

This is Shelton, Professor emeritis, UC-Davis, at his forte. This is what he taught and a work of passion. The world must come to see water and climate from this perspective - a whole or big picture way of looking at things. Not mathematically intimidating and a good treatment. I wish water managers at the local, state and country level thought this way (compared to "go get more"). This is a big treatment. Even understanding the subject it will take a while to get through it all - and will work as a handy reference to refer to from time to time.

A must have for any fan

This is a beautiful book, filled with fantastic illustrations and bits of history. This covers Lego from its inception up through 1999. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in Lego; great for adults and kids alike. Given the years covered there is greater emphasis on the history of the products and company rather than the IPs and/or franchises, unlike the more recent LEGO Book, which is basically a highlights tour of the most successful partnerships between Lego & other companies. Personally I prefer this one, not just because it was a part of my childhood but because it is the "Ultimate" LEGO Book. The title says it all.

This isn't a how-to book unless your Lego kit has 2 millions pieces plus...

This is a book illustrating the Lego brand and what would/could be possible IF a person had unlimited Lego parts. My 12 year old is interested in this book but I can see that after a few looks through the book he's going to be bored with it b/c he doesn't have a chance of building massive creations like this book illustrates and we're not going to a Legoland anytime soon. My six year old gave it a brief glance and was on to other things.

There are how-to idea books out there.

It's not a bad book by any means just be aware of what you are buying. I knew somewhat what I had bought but had hoped for some creations a mere mortal child might be able to duplicate with his/her own set of Legos. A Sydney Opera house large enough for an adult to sit inside is beyond what we can do at my house... ;)

I am a fan of almost all DK books - the images and interesting text make this a welcome addition to your LEGO book library. The book is more geared towards the history of LEGO as opposed to highlighting individual sets, but it's important to know the potential of the bricks without instructions.
