About the Author

Charles Harper is a professor of sociology at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. As a member of the faculty there since 1968, he has developed and taught numerous courses in the sociology department. Dr. Harper’s teaching and scholarly interests inolve the study of social change, globalization, the sociology of religion, social theory, and environmental sociology. He has published papers in a variety of academic journals.

Along with Environment and Society, Dr. Harper is the author of two other textbooks. Co-authored with Kevin Leicht, his book Exploring Social Change: America and the World (Prentice Hall, 2007) is now in its Fifth Edition. Another book, Food, Society, and Environment (Prentice Hall, 2003) was co-authored with Bryan F. LeBeau. .

As an undergraduate, Dr. Harper studied biology and the natural sciences. He received a bachelor’s degree from Central Missouri State University, a Master’s degree in sociology from the University of Missouri, and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

He and his wife, Anne, live close to Creighton’s campus near a “clan” of adult children, stepchildren, and grandchildren. He also enjoys traveling, bicycling, and reading.

Alan Turing died in 1954, but the themes of his life epitomize the turn of the millennium. A pure mathematician from a tradition that prided itself on its impracticality, Turing laid the foundations for modern computer science, writes Andrew Hodges:

Alan had proved that there was no "miraculous machine" that could solve all mathematical problems, but in the process he had discovered something almost equally miraculous, the idea of a universal machine that could take over the work of any machine.

During World War II, Turing was the intellectual star of Bletchley Park, the secret British cryptography unit. His work cracking the German's Enigma machine code was, in many ways, the first triumph of computer science. And Turing died because his identity as a homosexual was incompatible with cold-war ideas of security, implemented with machines and remorseless logic: "It was his own invention, and it killed the goose that laid the golden eggs."

Andrew Hodges's remarkable insight weaves Turing's mathematical and computer work with his personal life to produce one of the best biographies of our time, and the basis of the Derek Jacobi movie Breaking the Code. A book for the dedicated math fan

"The Imitation Game" was my favorite movie of 2014. I devoured the shows on PBS about cracking Enigma. I was glad to start reading this book. Soon I wasn't so glad. The writer, a mathematician, doesn't have the gift for narrative needed to bring Turing, and the group at Bletchley Park, to life.
The trivia included rather than pruned shows a lack of writing skill. For example, in early chapters about Turing's schooling, one reads nearly every note sent home by a schoolmaster. But a more major event (nailing Turing under floorboards) was glossed over in a sentence without a comment by the author as to impact, or primary source quote concerning the incident.
More troubling is the utter boring chapter on Bletchley Park. How can this chapter be boring? Yet it is. The explanation and sketches of how Turing's machine worked are unsatisfactory. I didn't learn anything from the authors (and I had several advanced math classes in college). I contrast this with biographies of physicists, contemporaries of Turing but written by writers (Richard Rhodes, for example): gripping books that manage to explain quantum theory or the workings of particle accelerators quite well.
Absolutely unsettling is the jarring way the author skips from topic to topic. On one page he note that Turing accepted his sexual orientation; on the next there is talk of suicide. Again, there is no comment by the author. Considering how Turing's life ended, one would expect more explication here. Related to this topic is the story of Turing and Bob Augenfeld, the young refugee Turing sponsored. Turing propositioning the minor Augenfeld would today be classed as sexual predation, yet the author glossed over it, noting that Augenfeld remained friends with Turing. An alternative explanation might be that Augenfeld hoped Turing would help get his mother out of Vienna, and did not seek to sever the relationship for this reason. This was in 1941.
In summary, this book was slow reading, even for someone interested in the man and the topic. I give it 3 stars because of the importance of the topic and the many contribution Turing made to mathematics and computer sciences.

An enjoyable historic read...

Where does Alan Turing: The Enigma rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
A bit more difficult to listen to than a fiction book because of the material it discusses, however it was a good book and audiobook combination. Highly recommend it for people who are interested in historic events and computers or encryption.

Who was your favorite character and why?
The story is about Alan, so I would have to say he is the one I like the most in this book.

Which scene was my favorite?
Not any one scene, but being able to see his passion and drive to get to a solution, often it was a detriment to him in the end (lost sleep, non compliant with work role, etc.) or others around him.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved me?
Not one specific point of movement for me. Maybe the ending of the book and seeing how his life ended and that he did not receive the credit due his name until recent history.

Too many digressions and diversions at the beginning!

I am upgrading my review from *** to **** as I plow through the book. The book is quite good, but quite detailed or technical. Not for a general reader.

It is quite good to see the role that Turing played during WW II and how effective he was. He was also very ineffective at times because he was clueless about social clues and unwilling/unable to understand military/war hierarchies. Still a fascinating and detailed, detailed, and more detailed book.

My original review:

Digression after digression, especially at the beginning of the book. Do I really need to know what letters Turing sent to a friend's mother or how she replied? Quite distracting. Too many digressions about historical figures, too. There is too much of that in the first 15% or so of the book.

Once the book gets into Turing's post-graduate work and his work to create computers, that kind detail is very useful -- and relevant.

I ordered this book as a Kindle book, because there were too many complaints about the small font in the print copies. It's easy to read on a Kindle app.

Dr. Robert L. Mathis is professor emeritus of management at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). Born and raised in Texas, he received his BBA and MBA from Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. in Management and Organization from the University of Colorado. At UNO, he has received the "Excellence in Teaching" award. Dr. Mathis has co-authored several books and published numerous articles covering a variety of topics. He also has held national offices in the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and served as president of the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). In addition, he is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) by HRCI. He has had extensive consulting experiences with organizations of all sizes and in a variety of areas. Firms assisted have been in the telecommunications, telemarketing, financial, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and utility industries. Dr. Mathis has extensive specialized consulting experience in establishing or revising compensation plans for small- and medium-sized firms. Dr. John H. Jackson is professor of management at the University of Wyoming. Born in Alaska, he received his BBA and MBA from Texas Tech University. He worked in the telecommunications industry in human resources management for several years before completing his PhD in Management and Organization at the University of Colorado. During his academic career, Dr. Jackson authored six other college texts and more than 50 articles and papers, including those appearing in ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW, JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, and HUMAN RESOURCES PLANNING. He has consulted with a variety of organizations on HR and management development matters and has served as an expert witness in a number of HR-related cases. At the University of Wyoming, he served four terms as department head in the Department of Management and Marketing. Dr. Jackson received the university's highest teaching award and has been recognized for his work with two-way interactive television for MBA students. Two Wyoming governors have appointed him to the Wyoming Business Council and the Workforce Development Council. Dr. Jackson serves as president of Silverwood Ranches, Inc.

Dr. Sean R. Valentine is the University of North Dakota alumni leadership and ethics professor and professor of management. Originally from Texas, he received a BS in Management/Human Resources from Park University, a BS in Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management from New Mexico State University, an MBA in Business Administration from Texas State University, and a DBA in Management from Louisiana Tech University. He was employed in the hospitality industry for many years and was an officer in the Army National Guard. During his academic career, Dr. Valentine published more than 75 articles in journals such as HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT, HUMAN RELATIONS, HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT QUARTERLY, EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS JOURNAL, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS RESEARCH, JOURNAL OF BUSINESS ETHICS, JOURNAL OF PERSONAL SELLING & SALES MANAGEMENT, CONTEMPORARY ACCOUNTING RESEARCH, and BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH IN ACCOUNTING. His primary research and teaching interests include human resource management, business ethics, and organizational behavior, and he has received numerous awards and other recognition for his work. He also has consulted with a variety of organizations on different business matters.

Very Solid Textbook

In terms of textbooks, I have to give this book high praise.

I bought it for an HR class. There were no assigned readings, but I wanted the background because I do not work in HR.

Human Resources can be a dry subject, but this book made it interesting. The concepts were well-developed from a solid foundation. The chapters were easy to read, and they were broken up into relevant subsections.

I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised.

Not Great, Not Bad Either

Let me begin by saying, this is not a bad book. On the flip side of that, however, I found the book to be completely predictable and basic in its level of complexity. I purchased this book as part of a graduate course and it is not graduate level. This would be perfect for a max 200 level "Introduction to HR" undergraduate course. The upsides of the book is that it does cover pretty much all of the major facets a person should know about HR and does get into lots of the nooks and crannies, just in a very basic way. The part of the book that I felt it was lacking in is in connecting the knowledge presented with decision making for strategic, high-level managers.

About the Author

Isabella Nova is Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Department of Energy, Politecnico of Milan, Italy. Nova’s research work is focused on the study of environmental catalytic processes, including Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx by NH3 and Diesel Particulate filters for the removal of soot and on new processes for the production of clean energy, such as the photocatalytic water splitting. She has co-authored over 100 publications on national and international journals in the fields of Chemical Reaction Engineering and Heterogeneous Catalysis and three national and international patents.

Enrico Tronconi is Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. His main research interests are in the area of Catalytic Reaction Engineering, with emphasis on industrial chemical processes for energy conversion and for environmental protection. His most recent work is focused on DeNOx after treatment technologies for vehicles, as well as on fundamental and engineering aspects concerning the development of novel structured catalysts and reactors. Tronconi has authored or co-authored over 180 scientific publications in international journals and is the inventor of 10 patents.

This book is AMAZING! After reading, and loving The Infamous Ellen James, I had no idea how N.A. Alcorn was going to top it. But holy hell, she freaking did! In the Infamous Ellen James, you're introduced to Trent's superhero c*ck, and I was in a book boyfriend fog for days. I didn't think Trent could be replaced, but you better believe I fell so hard for James! He is no Robin to Trent's Batman. He's like the Hulk, Superman, and Captain America all rolled into one big ball of sexy manhood! And Amy? She's just as hilarious as Ellen. Do not miss out on this series! You'll be swooning, crying, and doubled over laughed on every single page!!

This is N.A. Alcorn's 2nd book in the Infamous Series... I loved The Infamous Ellen James and wondered how N.A. would top that one... but man, she knocked this one out of the park!! This book needs to come with a warning... Do not read while in bed with your SO while they are trying to go to sleep... I literally woke mine up shaking the bed laughing one minute then sobbing like a little girl the next.. this book took me on a emotional roller coaster and I loved it.. Avoiding Amy Jackson is one of my top 2 favorite reads of all time, The Infamous Ellen James being the other...I can not wait for more from N.A. Alcorn, it doesn't matter what I am reading, when she puts out a new book I will stop and read hers...I freakin love her sense of humor and story lines......STOP right now and get this book!!! You will not regret it!!!!!!!!!
